Coupling vs decoupling: what does each do? which is better?

I have ProAc One SCs mounted on Atlantis stands. I have a foam rubber mat, about 4x5", between speaker and stand. I have been reading about different ways to connect the speakers and stands. The Fat Dots decouple. Blue tac couples solidly (supposedly).

What happens with decoupling; why is it good? What happens with coupling (some companies make the stand fixed to the speaker)?

What effects does each have on the sound? Which is better?

Hi, Jim. I recommend a set of four Square Fat Dots between each speaker and stand. A decoupling/isolation approach will bring out the best potential of the speakers, bringing out a more natural sonic result that's more faithful to the recorded event. Foam rubber, however, will not give an ideal result, because it's too slow interacting with very high-frequency acute vibrations that cause a lot of glare and grunge and foam rubber tends to introduce its own lower-frequency resonances into the vibrational environment.
