Title: Personal update, with a heavy heart
Post by: Vapor Audio on 7 Jan 2014, 06:05 pm
I keep my personal life close to the vest, always have.  My wife is even frustrated at times that I keep things to myself, so it's with hesitation that I post this at all.  However it relates to business in that for the past 2 weeks I've been too distracted to get any Vapor Audio work done.  Also I haven't kept communication with customers like I've needed to during that time.  To those of you who have needed to speak with me but haven't been able to get in touch, my apologies.

On Dec 22nd my cat went missing.  Now I know, some of you are out there reading and thinking "seriously, he's that worked up over a cat?"  Trust me, I used to be one of those guys.  I've had more cats than I could count, growing up in the country we always had cats to keep the yard and barn clean.  I loved them but never really became attached to any, and when they died it was no big deal.  But my Churchill however, he and I have been attached at the hip for 9 years now.  We rescued him as a stray and very quickly he became 'my' cat.  He follows me like my shadow, we have our own language and communication ... he's more like a small hairy human than a cat.  I've known for years that I was going to be a wreck if/when something happens to him.  And that's exactly what happened 2 weeks ago.

I let him outside like I always do so he can roam the neighborhood, but this time he didn't come back.  That occasionally happens, but next morning he still wasn't at the door, nor next evening.  That's when I became worried, because it's been very cold here this year, and because that's unlike him.  In trying to find him I did everything I could, to no avail.  And now that we have 12" of snow and 2 nights in a row of -10 temps, I have to face the fact that he's most likely dead.  Believe me, it's not easy ... just typing those words is hard.  I never imagined I'd become this attached to an animal, and losing him took a piece of me with it.  And the way it all happened, if before he left somebody asked me to lay out a worst case scenario, this would have been it.  The gut-wrenching twists that happened along the way had me cursing God, then praising, then back to cursing again.

So I have to move on now, starting today I'm back to work on customers builds.  I also know I can't just forget, this will eat at me for months.  There will be times I just don't want to talk and won't answer my phone because of it ... please try and understand, and I'll do my best to move forward.  This post is also in memoriam, and good therapy for me.  Churchie, I love you buddy.

Sorry, Ryan.

Go to a shelter and get a kittie soon.  It won't replace Churchill but it will warm your heart in its own new way.

We spent 2 weeks feeling sad before getting a new (in this case) dog.  I still miss Sydney but Beau is a bundle of joy right now.

Please rescue another cat as soon as you can. They need you.

Not even so much as tracks in the snow.

Sorry man. About all I can do is offer you a warm hug and a cold beer.

Ryan:
With this weather it is very possible someone within a couple blocks of your house took him inside thinking they were "saving him"-- especially if he had no collar or tag with contact information. He may just show up once the weather breaks and they let him out. One of our three cats was a roamer (Buster -- looked just like Churchill) didn't come back for a while so we were a little worried but knew he was a healthy, strong cat and could survive. Almost a year past and one day there he is, acting just like he'd been gone for a couple hours. Been home ever since. Turns out some people up the street thought he was a stray and took him in. They decided to move and left him. Guess they served better food than Purina Cat Chow. Hang in there. When are you available for some listening--got to hear your latest work.

Hang in there, Ryan.  Maybe he was picked up as a stray.  Did you call any of the local shelters... maybe he was brought to one?  I understand your feelings 110%  My daughter's cat (my four-legged Grand-daughter!) is my best friend in the house. I wish you all the best.

Take Care,

Having feelings and emotions are what make us human, and I honestly feel that it is preposterous to feel in any way embarrassed, sorry, or somehow less than for letting your human side show, regardless of weather you're a man or woman. Pets can be amazing companions and are sometimes better than our human friends. I hope Churchill comes back to you safely.

Ryan, so sorry to hear about this. I have always gotten my pets from the shelter and everyone has been incredibly loyal and an indispensable part of family life. It is hard to explain the joy they bring on a daily basis and the sorrow you feel when they are gone until it hits home. Still, I can not foresee a time in my life that I would be without a pet. Hang in there.

So sorry to hear this. I can definitely relate - I have several Cats and although I love them all, there is a special one that I raised from about 1 week old that I am especially attached to. I know it will be tough if I ever lose him.

I hope that you can find another to share that closeness with, although I'm sure it's hard to imagine. A new pet or perhaps spending more time with another might help.

Best wishes Ryan.

Hard time for the whole family no doubt.  My 19 year old Tuxedo died last summer, it was a rough couple of days for us all.  He was a rescue too.  He picked my wife at the shelter, and would sleep on the girls change table when they were young.

Our new cat Bear is indoor and outdoor but the last couple of nights I have worked hard to limit his time outside, which he hates.  It has been very cold up here in Toronto too.

I hope your heart heals fast.

I am so sorry for your loss. Some will get it and some will not. I feel for those who will not. They will miss one of the greatest joys in life. Pets are more than just animals. They are part of the family; a furry child, if you will. They love unconditionally and ask for nothing.

Very sorry for your loss Ryan. Somewhere in the Bible it says: "where your treasure is, so will your heart be also" You have nothing to be embarrassed or apologetic about. You have invested love and emotion and time into your buddy and you are experiencing true loss.

Ryan, sorry to hear about Churchill.  I'm an animal lover in general, and remember when my wife adopted "Missy", a gray striped tabby to keep our Akita company.  Missy quickly learned to use the doggy door, spent much of her time outdoors, but would always be waiting for breakfast.  One morning she wasn't there. . .we found her at the side of the road down the block, having been hit by a car.

So, I feel for ya'.

I appreciate all the kinds words, thank you all so much!

As much as I'd like to think somebody took him in, I'd say it's doubtful.  I put signs up around the neighborhood, and have knocked on most of the doors around here.  I've looked in peoples back yards, in out buildings and under decks, etc.  I've also been to all the local shelters and given them pictures in case he shows up.  Yes, he's a big strong kitty still in his prime with all his claws, so there's a chance.  But when all the food is covered by a foot of snow, and almost 48 hours of sub-zero temps, it would be very difficult for him to make it through.

The hardest part is not knowing.  I could live with finding him dead, at least I'd have some closure.  But every minute I can't stop thinking I should be out there looking.  I have to either decide that he's gone, or continue to let it consume me.  But knowing I need to move on and actually doing it are two different things.

I think shelter pets are the best. We found Jazmin when she was 8 weeks old at our local shelter. It was 8 months after we lost our Bear, he was 15 and a half and gave us much love. We thought Jazmin would top out around 50lbs but as you can see she grew to around 85lbs. One pet will never replace a lost one but Jazmin has been a real blessing.   Good Luck    jw

yeah that's tough. a little over a year ago my kid started feeding an outdoor cat named klaus. everyone in the neighborhood knew this street cat and half of us fed it. i spent a bunch of money and frustration trying to build it an outdoor shelter to survive last chicago winter, fully knowing that it wouldn't. we even took klaus to the vet to get a few shots and a checkup. sometime in the middle of the winter, klaus stopped coming around. my wife eventually said she saw a cat run over that she thought was him but she was too sad to look. cats are great. so are dogs, birds, fish, whatever. they do become part of your family. i agree with the earlier poster, when the grieving goes away some get another kitty and give it a great home.

There is a neighbor's cat that comes around because we fuss over him and give him attention since our 2 beloved older cats died and we miss having a cat around. The neighbor's kids love the cat but the owners not so much (the cat sleeps in their garage instead of their house). Anyway we had to take him to his home twice this winter because he got stuck over here during storms. The second time was tonight when we got over 2 feet of snow. If we didn't know who the owner was we'd keep him here so don't give up hope, maybe he is safe and warm somewhere.

Hi Ryan and all Audio Circle members.
Sorry about the lost of your really nice pussy cat.
My former boss had two huge pussy cats
and one day (As usual) he let them go outside to make their things
and one did not come back.
The next day, no Puch (His name), the day after that, still no Puch.
Six months later, when he was calling is second cat, who showed up, yes PUCH !
Where did he go for six months ? Probably was abducted by a neighbour
and finally found a way to escape.
I wish your nice cat show up one day without warning.
That would be a nice surprise.
That what I wish you.

That's tough, man......especially when you have reminders of him all over your house. I'm sure you can still feel his presence there and wish you could turn around and find him laying in his favorite spot, only he's not there when you look. The only advice I can give you is to try and keep yourself busy and do your best to think positive thoughts. It's OK to grieve and let your mind process the possibility of loss, but don't give up all hope yet. I believe the weather is supposed to warm up a bit over the next few days. Maybe he'll come out of wherever he's been keeping himself protected. Have you checked under your car hoods? No this isn't a cruel joke. Cats like to crawl under cars and perch themselves near the engine, as it can be warm there. Seen it myself. I grew up somewhat out in the sticks in KS and we had many barn cats.

Ryan, there is always hope.
My brother & wife were going on vacation so they brought their German shep mix to his in-laws about 5 miles away, The in-laws let the dog out and had the back gate open, dog took off
and they looked for a month and my nieces put out all the flyers and my brother had an alert out with neighboring police towns, my brother is a cop. A month after the dog escaped he showed up on my brothers front porch, about 20 pounds lighter,
looking famished and a bit beat up but still in good health.
 Hoping the best for you.

Sometimes people just take animals in if they think they are doing it a favor. Perhaps one of these people thought the cat shouldn't be in such cold.

Unfortunately they often don't have faith in the owners, and don't share the same opinions of pet care (some don't believe in outside cats or dogs or something, I don't get it).

When I was in college my roomate adopted a dog that was rescued from abuse. It was scared all the time; but eventually turned its behavior around entirely. But while I lived with it the neighbor lady took it multiple times. My roommate had to keep going to her house to get it back. Another roommate caught her sneakin in the yard to either leave a gift bag or take the dog. She was told to leave but it didn't stop her other times. The yard was fenced in, the dog wasn't a digger, but golly that poor dog needed rescued again from that abuse of a big yard to run in... The witch called the cops on us for playing acoustic guitar on the roof at 9pm on a Sunday, alll 5 of us; or you know if she could hear us or whatever. Maybe she thought the rest of us harbored pets of our own in the house that we abused with food and love that wasn't from her. I guess she went to New Orleans after Katrina to save pets. Ripe heart that lady...

The good part? The dog loved the treats and heated blanket. It didn't know what was going on.

Ryan,
I have always thought that anything you take care of, care about, or for which you provide care,  has value. That value can be an inherent characteristic of the animal or something that you ascribe or attribute to the cat. Which ever, it really doesn't matter, you still care. You and Churchill had a lot of caring over the years. I've rescued many animals for the last 30 years, and I really feel your sorrow.
There is always hope!      Roger

I understand the emotional trauma in a situation like this. My cat went missing for five days one time and to make matters worse it was advertised on the local news that some Satan worshippers had captured and killed a lot of pets in my area. I thought my cat may have been one of the victims. Then one morning as I was going to work my neighbor opened his garage door and my cat came running out and back into my house as fast as possible. It turns out he had wandered into the neighbor's garage and was locked up for those five days since the neighbor hadn't opened his garage during that time. Later that day the neighbor came over to my house and notified me in writing that he would eliminate any cat that came into his garage because my cat pooped and peed in the agrage. We didn't get along after that.

One time our cat disappeared and we thought she snuck out and jumped into the back of a delivery truck while the delivery men were bringing in a mattress. We looked all over for her inside and outside for hours. We called the delivery men at home and the furniture store but they no one saw the cat. We were heartbroken and ready to give up when all of a sudden she walked out of the back of our Lazy Boy recliner! Apparently the delivery men scared her and she went and hid in the recliner ... for hours!
Another time my wife's friend cat came up missing, they scoured the neighborhood and put up missing cat posters. Finally after a WEEK they found the cat in an upstairs closet! The door had been shut and she couldn't get out.

Hey Ryan,

This reminds me of a touching story I've read recently to my 4 (almost 5) year old called The Christmas Day Kitten by James Herriot. If you have youngish kids you might check if you can find a copy at your local library. For animal lovers in general I would recommend any James Herriot stories especially All Things Bright and Beautiful and All Creatures Great and Small. His touching stories are a wonderful catharsis to feeling down about a lost pet.

Best Regards,
Ryan

Ha, that's funny!

Churchill wasn't much of a predator, he wasn't interested in eating anything he catches ... just playing with it.  But one time he brought how a few baby Cardinals.  He didn't just bring home the birds and drop them at the back door, he brought the entire nest with the birds still in it!  I have no idea how he even did that, but he sure was proud of himself  :)

Churchill, like his namesake, seems quite the diplomat. I've had pets for years, but until I married and followed my wife's example, I never appreciated how much they could do for me...until I showed them the love and caring they needed. When I get a bit sad about losing my all-time favorite Montana..a Rhodesian Ridgeback, I just think about all the joy he gave me over 11 years. Here's hoping and praying that somehow Churchill is still around and makes it home.

Hi Ryan and all Audio Circle members.
The more I read about your lost and the comments of many Audio Circle members,
the more I am convinced that your pussy cat was part of your life and even part of you.
I sure hope that one day he will unexpectenly show up at your door step.

We just last week lost our diabetic cat Junie who loved us non stop for 17 years.
I wish I had words of comfort for you Ryan but I really just do not know what to say! What can make you feel better. Keep looking for really healing words. Just know we are living vicariously your sadness.
Just going through the motions right now. Not even feeling remotely able to rationalize this bad dream yet. Looking for motion and wanting to feed our little girl.
I do hope writing those kind words of your hairy little human makes this easier.
Kind regards,
tom

I just saw this for the first time. I'm really sorry about your loss, I totally understand. There are no words, just know that you are not alone and that many others care and feel your grief.
be gentle with your self,

I too am very sorry to hear this. Our pets become part of our families, and losing them hurts. People who think they're "just a cat" or "just a dog" don't get it.

We had something similar happen to our cat many years ago. We let him out one night and never saw him again. As you mentioned, not knowing what happened is one of the worst parts.

Singer Karla Bonoff also dealt with the same situation. She had a cat named Tex for 16 years. A friend let him out, and he never came back. She wrote the song Goodbye My Friend to help her cope with her loss. I hope it brings some comfort to you, later if not now.

We once lost an old cat in a large apartment complex in New York City. We posted signs all over the neighborhood, but heard nothing. My favorite part of this story is that my wife called the NYPD to ask if they had a psychic on staff who could help us find the cat. The cop answering the phone thought she was kidding and then crazy when he realized that she wasn't. We got lucky when a neighbor five floors up found her sitting on a bed in her apartment several days later.

Anyway, my condolences go out to you and your family for your loss. Seems crazy how attached we become to the little buggers, but it happens.

Jon

Sorry to hear about your little buddy, Ryan. Time will heal, and just maybe there is another feline out there looking for a cool owner like yourself.

I grew up with cats and a dog. but the only pet I've had as an adult was a stray tabby, much like Churchill. who turned up at my school many years ago. I told the kids to not bring him in, but they persisted, and he was soon adopted by us. He quickly recognized who was in charge during school time. When I would start class and begin talking to the kids, he would hear my voice, jump down from the piano where he had been snoozing, come across the length of the room and jump on my lap. The kids, mostly used to half wild barn cats, were fascinated. They called him Mr. T. after a TV character of the time. He lived at the school and had a place underneath the building where he could hold out in bad weather, but eventually I took him home, the first trip to town being during a blizzard/white out when we shut the school early. I didn't want to leave him out there in such bad weather. When I returned to my home town for summer, one of the kids took him home for the duration, but the next summer he ran away from his temporary summer home, some 20 miles from the school. I told the student to keep him inside their house or he'd run away. Sure enough, after a couple of days, they let him out and he disappeared. No doubt he left to look for me, figuring I must be at the school.  He was gone for three months. I had visions of him getting eaten by coyotes or bobcats, and when I returned for the beginning of school, I drove the area between the ranch he had run from and the school searching the prairie for him, without success. He was gone for three months.  A month after school had started, I got a call from one of the kids at Sunday school being held in the old building next to our school, saying, "Mr. T's back!" They crawled through a window of the school and put him inside. I couldn't come out right away, but when I did, there he was, looking worn, a little thin, and tired with calloused paws. He was clearly happy to be back just as was I glad to see him again. He no doubt had lived on rabbits or anything else he could catch for the three months. Many years later he developed a tumor in his throat and died on the operating table at the vet school at CSU, from loss of blood.  I was devastated and have never really gotten over it.

Just a cat, many would say, but those would just be the people who've never had one for a pet.

I still miss Churchill, and am sure that I will for years.  He was a really cool cat ...

But yesterday was my wife's birthday, and her and I had a deal.  If Churchie didn't come home by her birthday we'd start looking for a new cat.  Both of us, and my daughter of course, wanted a kitten.  But this time of year it's hard to find kittens, cats are smart enough to know not to get pregnant right before winter.  So we spent all day going to shelters and adoption days, and struck out.

Then we get home and I just look on craigslist for the heck of it.  There was a listing for free kittens, and it was just a few miles from our house!  The ad was just placed earlier that morning, so I call the guy and 2 of the 3 were already taken.  I couldn't say "we'll take the last one" quick enough!  So here she is, adorable 6 week old that we have spent all day playing with.  Doesn't get much cuter than this.

Sorry to hear about Churchill, Ryan. With a name like that, perhaps you'd have an interest in this.

FWIW, many years ago I had a (pet) skunk I named Piwacket, which I think I misspelled after Googling.

Hi Ryan and all Audio Circle members.

It's not my cat, but if it was,
Clementine would be the name of my pussy cat.
I thought of Blondie,
but Clementine sounds better for a cat.

My sincerest condolences.

We had to put 2 cats down in the last 6 months, 16 and 18 years old.
Friday we had to put down our 18 year old "Mugsy" he was with me constantly for 16 of those years.
Completely understand.

+1 That's perfect. Not over the top cutesy, but still obviously a girl's name.
Or just name her Miss Bojangles and be done.

If it were my cat I'd be partial to Winnie.  My dad had a Rot/Australian Sheperd mix that was the sweetest/coolest dog ever (and I still own a dog) named Winnie.

Sorry man, Churchill looks exactly, I mean to the tee, like Tailpipe, my cat of 11 years who turned up missing one day. It was not easy as Tailpipe was the only stable relationship I had. (It's all good now ;)

Take good care,

Sorry to hear about the loss of your little buddy.

I have a tabby named Billy that looks a lot like your boy. I dunno what I'd do if I lost him! He did go missing for three weeks at 7 months of age. Some local thought he was a stray and took him home but I got a tip and confronted the person and got my cat back. I put signs around the neighborhood and the person didn't live far but never contacted me about having the cat and even had the nerve to ask if I still wanted him! I remember thinking I'd rather know he's passed than him just dropping off of the planet and never knowing his fate. Here's hopping you do have closure.

Reading further down the thread it's really great you found a nice orange kitten!

Here is my Billy at around the time he went missing.

I also found an orange tabby one time in my back yard that was in terrible shape but had a collar with a tiny barrel I opened and it had the owners phone #. I returned the cat to very happy owners who said he'd been missing for 6 weeks!

You never know...

PS How about "Cheddar" as in the orange cheese!
