cd-1 problem
« on: 3 Nov 2009, 06:08 pm »
I have a norh cd-1 that i have had about 4 or 5 years.  Recently it has started having problems playing cd's.  Sometimes it simply wont start playing at all, other times it will start playing but suddently quit.  I assume that this is purely a transport problem.  Can you guys give my any advice about getting this fixed.

I think you are going to have some trouble finding parts. That player was discontinued because the transport, a CD-ROM player sourced from Panasonic, was no longer available.

The Thai company that made the players for Norh, also made players for California Audio Labs. If you can find one of their players, still working, you might be able to swap in the transport.

Thanks Wayne.  I did a quick search for california audio labs and found that they made a slew of different cd players.  Do you know the panasonic model numbher of my transport or which of the C.A.L. players have the same transport as mine?

I'm not sure of the model number of the actual part, but I believe the CAL Delta transport used the same mechanism as the Norh.
You might want to check the archives over on HarmonicDiscord.com. I vaguely recall some discussion about the CD-1 transport over there.

Here's an interesting post - it seems that Rich1 bought all the US parts after Cal Audio was sold, but he recommended Approved Audio Service for repairs.

The nOrh CD-1 was manufactured "to spec" by the factory that manufactured the Cal Audio CD players.
nOrh was presented with options and chose the CD-1 configuration, apparently a "CAL Delta Transport and Alpha 24/96 tubed DAC combined in one cabinet".
See this link for a possible similar CD player but remember it may NOT be the same player even though the chassis looks the same.

http://www.everestasia.com/Q for quality_product.htm  (I think it may be the QDS-15 not the QDS-5 which looks like the CD-1 chassis)

The transport of the CD-1 is technically a Matsushita transport, but I believe Matsushita is the parent company of Panasonic. Keep in mind that just because the CD stops playing or doesn't start does not automatically point to the transport. I leave my CD-1 on all the time, and in the 7+ years I have had it, its brains have gotten scambled a couple of times - i.e. the digital controls. I powered off for about 8 seconds and back on. After 30 seconds of ramp up time, things were back to normal.

Here are the technical pages for the Norh CD-1 which you currently can't get to via norh.com

A year or so back this was discussed on DIYaudio.com.

The entire Panasonic deck assembly (turntable/sled/laser) was identified (RAE0113Z) and a supplier (I believe it was Maplin in the UK) identified.

I ordered one and have now have it as a spare.  Price was around $75 delivered to the US

I actually fixed mine.  I removed the mounting screws which exposed the laser and I dusted everything with "spray can air", re-assembled - problem fixed.  But I'm going to order an assembly to keep as a spare. Thanks for the info charles.
