From time to time we have news and/or announcements that may be of benefit to individuals who do not necessarily monitor this site on a regular basis. So, as a convenience, we decided that starting in 2010 we would publish an email Newsletter with hot news, new product announcements, audio tips and exclusive special offers available only to newsletter subscribers.
If you would like to be on our list, you can subscribe here (http://www.salksound.com/subscription-ac.htm).
Enjoy.

Jim,
Had trouble trying to sign up using Vista 64 with IE8 32bit. The error said my entered security code from the graphic was not correct. Tried multiple times, then tried it from Firefox 3.5.6 and had no problem.
Thanks,
Steve
-
I had no issue using Safari on my MacBook running Snow Leopard.
-
Great idea Jim. I'm signed up... no troubles.
edit: Except that I may be on there twice now... I accidentally clicked the conformation email a second time. :duh:
Cheers, Happy New Year

No trouble signing up with Safari on MacBook Pro.
-
Vista Home Basic and Firefox.
Done.
-
Jim,
I also tried multiple times on my Mac G4 with Safari and Firefox..no go. Had to use my wife's new Mac and then no problems. Glad to see you got all your hardware/software issues resolved.

When the 1st issue coming?
In about two weeks. We'll shortly have a new model to introduce and will announce that in the first newsletter (among other things).

Is the subscription link no longer working? I tried to subscribe, but there's no security code showing on the page so that I can copy it.

Thanks for the head's up. I think I got it working again.

It doesn't seem to want to work for me. The security code is showing up now, but when I type it in and submit it, I get an error message that my entry doesn't match. I've tried it a number of times to be sure I'm not mistyping anything, but keep getting the same result.

I just tried it again and it worked for me. Just drop me an email at jim @ salksound.com and I can do it for you. Also, if you can let me know what broswer you are using, etc., perhaps I can figure out what might be going wrong.
- Jim
-
Jim, I'm using Safari on my MacBook Pro, which is likely the problem. I just tried subscribing again and got the same result. I'll send you an email.
-
I have tried unsuccessfully to subscribe more than a dozen times on both a Mac and a Microsoft based PC. Jim, I sent you an email asking you to enter my subscription.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike -
I took care of it.
If anyone else has problems, email me at jim @ salksound.com and I will take care of it. For some reason, it always works for me. So also let me know what browser and operating system you are using. Maybe I can sort it all out.

Nice newsletter Jim! So the SongBird is the floorstander you were telling me about. Hmmm...now I have to see if those will fit in my room!! I'm sure you've got another big selling speaker!

Thanks for the kind comments.
Newsletter emails are going out over a 2-day period so as not to overwhelm the servers. So if you did not get your copy yet, please wait until tomorrow before assuming yours was lost.
If you do not get your copy tomorrow, register again at the link above and I will resend it. Also, check to make sure your copy wasn't filtered as spam (nothing we can do about that).
As for questions about the SongBirds, they are on our web site but not linked yet. I wanted to give newsletter recipients an advanced look at this new product. We'll link it to the menu system on Sunday.

Jim:
Great job, as with everything. Very interesting articles.
The SongBird looks like a great speaker. A full range, easily-driven, floor standing, transmission-line speaker with top-notch design, components and construction and the Salk Signature Sound for 1295.00? Wow, something for everyone and for everyone's budget.

nothing in my inbox. i will try agAin!

Jim,
Those new SongBirds look real nice. If the ER15 measures flatter than the CA15 that is used in the SongTowers, would there be any benefit in retrofitting the ST's with the ER15? Will future SongTower production now use the ER15, or possibly as an option?
The custom Bubinga looks awesome! They also look like they will play as low as the ST's since there is only 1 Hz difference on the low end frequency response. They are less efficient that the ST's, but being 8 ohms, I think they would work really well with my AVA Ultimate 70's bridged. Do you think that would be a good application for the speaker? I think you heard Franks UltraValve amps in bridged configuration at RMAF.
Thanks,
Ron

Haven't gotten mine yet either.

Check your spam folder. I found mine in my yahoo spam folder.
I marked mine as Not Spam, so I should be fine from now on.

This is currently under consideration. In terms of retrofits, that would not be advisable since the crossovers would be different and I don't think the benefits would be worth the costs involved. The audible differences would likely not be that great. But we may make the switch at some point and adjust the prices of the speakers accordingly.

I think the combination would be great. The only caveat I would offer is that if you like your music loud, the SongTowers would be a better fit. You can only move so much air with a single 5" driver. But at reasonable volumes, that combo would be hard to beat.

Jim,
The newsletter looks great! And perfect timing, too, since a friend of mine who moved to Hong Kong is looking for speakers <$2K. So I told him about the new SongBirds. They look like a spectacular bargain.

Jim re-sent it to me and it no longer goes to my spam folder.

I just read the second revision of the Salk Newletter and really enjoyed the article about the passive radiator design of the SoundScape (formerly named the HT4). The two speakers combined can reach 116dB at 20Hz without room gain!!!??? Are you kidding me?! Find me another speaker at this price range that can do that.
-
Thanks again, enjoyed the read.
-
I, too, enjoyed the article. Thanks. So, will the 10" Soundscape be tuned the same way with the same 12" passive radiators? The difference from the 12" one of efficiency? Also, does the additional surface area with the radiators add to the naturalness of the bass?
-
I, too, enjoyed the article. Thanks. So, will the 10" Soundscape be tuned the same way with the same 12" passive radiators?
They will use the same 12" passives, but they will be tuned to to an F3 of 21Hz rather than 18Hz for the 12" woofer. This simply requires less mass added to the passives.
The difference from the 12" one of efficiency?
The differences are the F3 (18Hz vs. 21Hz) and efficiency. The 10" is about 84-85db and the 12" is about 86-87db.
Also, does the additional surface area with the radiators add to the naturalness of the bass?
The surface area simply isures that the passives will not bottom out when there is a lot of deep bass in the program material at high SPL's. Keep in mind that the 10" is only tuned about 3Hz higher, so the output of the passives will be almost the same as with the 12".

Thanks for the info Jim. My question about the naturalness of the bass comes from things I have read from Legacy speakers and from Magnepan both of whom claim that the greater the surface area of the bass reproducers the more natural the sound. Or is it simply a matter of moving air? The best reproduction I have ever had of an acoustic bass was some Maggie 1Ds I owned back in the early 80s. I mean if you played the LA Four direct to disc Ray Brown was in the room with you! Those speakers had two 7 sq. ft. panels for each channel just for the low end. But if the technology allows, can one manage the same quality reproduction from a single 10 or 12" driver?

But if the technology allows, can one manage the same quality reproduction from a single 10 or 12" driver?
The challenge is to move the appropriate amount of air in a manner that exhibits low distortion at the target SPL. This can be done in two ways.
First, you can use a large surface area with more limited XMAX requirements. Or, you can use a smaller surface area, but it will require a larger XMAX to make certain the driver is capable of the SPL required and won't bottom out.
As you can see by this graph simulating the SoundScape 10" woofer module, the driver (shown in blue) starts rolling off at about 80 - 90Hz and is 3db down at about 37Hz or so. Since the passives (shown in red) are tuned lower, their output is relatively low at that point and gradually increases as they approach their tuning frequency. Below 30Hz, most of the output comes from the passives. When you sum the output of the driver and the passives, you end up with flat response and an F3 around 21Hz.
If you start with a low distortion driver and do not allow it to exceed it's XMAX, you are half way there. The passives, then, need enough area and XMAX to avoid bottoming out at the tuning and SPL capabilities desired. If you can design a system that meets those criteria, the result should be clean bass with low distortion.
Note that at the passive tuning frequency, the driver's excursion is at a minimum. This is not necessarily intuitive, but that is the way the system works. So even though the system is tuned for a low F3, the driver itself never approaches its XMAX.
Keep in mind that, in this case, the lowest frequencies (those requiring the greatest amount of air movement) are handled primarily by a pair of 12" passives. If the cone area or XMAX of the passives were greater, perhaps only one would be required. But, in this case, two are required to reach the target SPL levels at the frequencies involved. You end up with two 12" passives which have 25% more cone area than a single 18" passive and they have plenty of XMAX to reach the design goals. So we're good to go.
Of course, this is an over-simplified explanation of what is happening, but hopefully you can understand it.

Thanks Jim. I would love to hear a pair of Soundscapes to hear that bass, although I do really like my Archos. Maybe I'll get to Michigan one day.
