USB player to RCA outputs?
« on: 12 Jun 2022, 11:17 pm »
Does anyone know of a USB player adapter that has RCA outputs to run to an analog amp/preamp?

The players I found online all have USB cord connection.   I need RCA outs on the adapter.

Thanx!       GeneZ

Genez,

Can you provide a make/model of a USB player of interest so I can understand what you are referring to?

I do not have a make or model number.

What I am looking for is a MAKE AND MODEL NUMBER for what I can use as an adapter to play thumb drives on my analog equipment.

Here's one.

I am not sure how well it's going to work for you without a display but perhaps it will be fine if you just want to plug in a USB stick and hit play.

If you want a unit with a display look at a portable DVD player that has a USB input. Perhaps this will work for you:

A more typical approach would be to plug the USB stick into a computer and then use the analog jack on the computer to feed your preamp.

If I understand correctly, the thumb drive contains music files, so you are looking for a DAC into which you could plug the thumb drive? DACs will typically have RCA (and often XLR) analogue outputs, so that part shouldn't be a problem.

At the very simple end of things, something like the Allo Katana would let you plug in a USB thumb drive with music files and use a computer/tablet/phone on the same local network to tell the Katana which music files to play. It has a RCA outputs that would send analogue out to your amp/preamp. Since it is based on the Raspberry Pi computer platform, it can use Volumio or MoodeAudio software that lets it see the music on the thumb drive and play it back. You can have one of those preinstalled by Allo.

There are more expensive options as well, like the Bluesound Node or the Lumin D2

For convenience, you could put all of your music on a USB solid state drive (more capacity than most thumb drives) and have everything available for playback.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions...

Sorry...Need to clarify something, please.

The adapter is not going to be used for music so much.  Its for recorded instruction/ information I need to learn from.

In my case?  It can be a simpler device. No need for high end sound.  Something simple that takes USB sticks and lets me listen through an analog audio system.

Given that, why not a computer and headphones or earbuds? Could be a laptop, desktop or even some tablets would accommodate your memory stick. Perhaps you have at your disposal already.

Failing that, this would seem to fill the bill for your original request:

I can plug a USB stick into my TV and use the TVs media browser to play audio and movies. I think most TVs do this nowadays, and you could do it on your computer.

It seems like there needs to be more explanation of your intended use case here to make useful recommendations.

Something simple that takes USB sticks and lets me listen through an analog audio system.

Let's start simple then. Connect the USB drive to your phone with a $6 adapter.
Listen using wireless earbuds

You may have to copy the files to the phone first
Then you can either plug in headphones or use a RCA to USB C cable to plug the phone into your stereo.

I want to simply hook it up to my Bose Wave radio...  It has RCA inputs.

Of course, I could always play through my PC which is across the room.

My phone?  Its in an old man's flip.  8)

The Bose sits in my study area.  Just need something to adapt thumb drive to the Bose.

thanx....  Gene

Just need something to adapt thumb drive to the Bose.

Thank you. That helps significantly. The challenge is that the devices that read the audio files from the thumb drive and convert them to an analogue output to go into the Bose are controlled by a smart phone, tablet, or computer. They need the software on the smart phone, tablet, or computer to tell them to "play this file."

It sounds like you are seeking to plug in the USB stick and have whatever audio is on there just be sent to the Bose. If you put some files numbered 1, 2, 3, etc. on the USB stick then they would just automatically play in that order.

I'm not aware of anything that would do that. All the devices that would read audio files from the USB stick would rely on some software running on a smart phone, tablet, or computer to manage the playback.

It sounds like you are looking for something self-contained. A box that you plug the USB stick into with a little screen that lets you select the file to play and connects to the Bose RCA inputs.

Something like this should work well for $40. Instead of putting the files on a USB stick, however, you put them on a microSD card and put the card into the device. You might need a cheap device to plug into the computer so you can copy the files onto the microSD card (instead of USB stick). The third link below is the cable that connects the little $40 box to the RCA inputs on the Bose.

https://www.amazon.com/32GB-Mp3-Player-Bluetooth-5-0/dp/B08CVR9PVS/ref=psdc_1264866011_t3_B00VXMY262

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-MobileMate-microSD-Card-Reader/dp/B07G5JV2B5/ref=sr_1_3?crid=131EPFDLJAZJA&keywords=usb+microsd+reader&qid=1655160710&s=electronics&sprefix=usb+microSD%2Celectronics%2C100&sr=1-3

https://www.amazon.com/CableCreation-Auxiliary-Splitter-Gold-Plated-Smartphones/dp/B077GRJ33V/ref=psdc_667846011_t2_B00LM2Y2U4

So, about $60 in total, if using microSD cards rather than USB thumb drives is feasible for your needs.

Thanks again...

Looks like I might resurrect an old laptop laying around and forget about the Bose.

If your PC has Bluetooth you can buy a $20 Bluetooth receiver, connect it to your Bose, plug your USB stick into your PC and specify the Bluetooth receiver as your 'speakers'. The sound should come out of the Bose.
