When we first meet Henry Drax (Colin Farrell) stumbling through an English port he is savage, feral and casually homicidal as he is looks for his next drink of rum. Colin Farrel in unrecognizable under a full beard, a driven man with the eyes of a wild animal. Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell), ship’s surgeon on the whaler has an education but also a mysterious past. The two characters symbolize civilization and savagery which will assuredly play out over the mini-series 5 episodes. A whaling ship in the 19th century is not a place for gentle or timid men.

"The North Water" is immersive TV, awesome Arctic vistas are contrasted with dense claustrophobic scenes inside the ship where you can smell the smoke, sweat and rum. Filmed in the Svalbard Archipelago in Norway, the location is as extreme as the men.

If you liked Season 1 of "The Terror" then "The North Water" will be right up your alley.

Episode 1 is now streaming on AMC+
