Stands
« on: 26 Apr 2021, 12:24 am »
Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked to death.

I currently have Kef R3 and may replace them with some Reference 1’s in the future.

Looking for stands.  Is there a noticeable difference in sound between $2000 Kef stands versus $100 Monolith or Pangea stands?

Thanks for any help or recommendations.

While the KEF stands look very nice, both the $500 ones spec's for your current speakers and the $2,000 bespoke stand for the Reference 1s, I can't imagine they're 10 or 20 times better than the Monolith or Pangaea stands.  Perhaps I'm missing something, but reading the KEF site they look like alloy stands with fillable centers and very nice adjustable footers.  A little web surfing should result in finding a near duplicate for much less.

See if you can find an old pair of Osiris two-column stands.  Best of luck,

I commissioned stands from Timber Nation for a very reasonable price.  The stands I ordered were pedestals (same width/depth as the monitors) and fillable.  They ended up weighing 75 pounds when filled to prevent tip over.

I couldn't agree more. How you choose to couple or decouple the speaker and its stand ( depending on your particular environment) will have more of an impact than the stand itself. A friend who has experimented along these same lines with monitor type speakers loves the IsoAcoustics Mini Pucks between the speaker and the stand's top plate. In this case, the stand is spiked thru carpet to a concrete floor with the Mini Pucks decoupling the speaker from the stand. In this scenario, he said he hears no difference whether using an $85 MDF stand from Amazon or a $500 all steel stand. If you're dealing with a suspended floor, I would consider a form of decoupling between the floor and the stand. Bottom line, I wouldn't even begin to consider spending $2K on a stand.

I have Monoprice stands for my Harbeths. They are sturdy and well made. I bought some hex bolts to use instead of the supplied spikes in order to easily adjust their positions on the wood floor. Also am using the mini pucks between speakers and stands, which make a noticeable difference.

YouTube has a Monolith stand unboxing, assembly, filling with sand video. The sand filled stand weighs 41.8 lbs.

KEF S2 stand unboxing. The KEF has a nice hidden wire channel and the color can match the speaker

Audio Advisor recommends using Blu Tack with Pangea stands

Ron at New Record Day has a EVP review:
Coupling VS Decoupling: What you NEED to know!

Those EVP's are too rich for me, glad Ron likes them but at $800 just for my sub - forgetaboutit.

The IsoAcoustics Mini Iso-Puck look interesting. The 0.9" height could raise the speaker too high. Free shipping from Amazon and probably free return too if they don't work out.
