Randy Weston - Carnival

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1r5FsTGb80

Hi Jim,

I was in Dallas last week.  Went to the Free Man and saw The John Lewis Trio.  Had a lot of fun.

Billy Harper plays on this Randy Weston record.  I've always enjoyed it.

Hey man, googling the FREE MAN PDQ!  I don't know the place.  How was it?  Btw, I live near Houston now, but enjoy visiting Dallas where I grew up and often do.

Stanley Cowell - Blues For The Viet Cong

Jim,

The Free Man

John Lewis kept looking at his wrist watch.  I think he was running late.  Drummer tried hard not to make eye contact.  Pedestrians outside were more interesting.  Saxophone guy stole the show.  Bass player was along for the ride.

Overall, better than the lifeless, Bill Frisell show back in May in Minneapolis.

Arthur, you're a man after my own heart, but you gotta get this and that's comin from a devotee tho I am particular about the album (and the sound).  I checked Amazon and found three used-in excellent condition LP's from reputable sources at reasonable prices.  Don't know about CD's but you can check.  This collection of tunes and the group's playing of them is the best I've heard of the Jazz Crusaders since they arrived in L.A. and disbanded years later.  You must get this.  A word to the wise, turn this mother up so the front line on stage is reach-out-and-touch it:

I'm rather partial to The Emperor and their cover of Coltrane's Impressions which run back-to-back (there are only 6 tunes on it, it's a live album remember), still, after a lotta moons.  In case you can't make out the title, it is Live Sides from performances at The Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, L.A., a Blue Note Re-issue Series.   They were at their best with Buster Williams on bass as he is here.  His notes are money.

Thanks for the tip Jim, will check it out. Have been 50/50 with the 2 LPs I've purchased off of Azon. Hadn't done my homework on vinyl rating which was part of it, but will definitely check in the morning to see what's available. I still haven't listened to all of the 20% or so of the vinyl I kept when I switched to CDs ( :duh:) in the late 80s early 90s, so have been slow to add to the library. Budget has been tight too.

It was delightful to hear the difference when I pulled the old Thorens out & fired it up last fall, and a friend who knows my system well was pretty amazed at how good the old black discs could sound when he stopped by for a listening session.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.  Hope you can find it.  It's special alright.  I have a CD of another date they did at the Lighthouse which I will share with you later.  Maybe, you know what I'm talking about already?  No worries if you  don't.  You will.
