Shouldn't be any big surprise. Just like how there are better athletes today. Time and progress march on.

Gee, Jimi is your guitar god...your logic doesn't make sense as you can't have it both ways.  Musicians for the most part are not athletes.

No jimi is just god period. But there are far more talented guitarists today. I still love his music.

And rock / metal drummers today are very much athletes. Calm yourself Jim, I'll get to you.

Let's take this one at a time, start easy.

We'll start with Thomas Pridgen, formerly of the MARS VOLTA...

Enjoy

(hat's off to your Cobham though, but Pridgen is just way more technical. He's laughing, not even looking at what he's doing. Make sure to watch all three.)

Well I was 13 when I went to one of my first concerts and saw Black Sabbath. Must say it was very 13 like to hear Phish close the NYE show tonite with a rousing "Iron Man"

Thomas Pridgen is obviously an excellent drummer. Very Fast.
For me, the awe and goose bumps aren't there.

You have to like the music. If you're of a certain age, you are apt to like what you liked and kinda stop taking in new music the same way you did when you were young. The Mars Volta is legendary, among my friends.

Pound for pound, beat for beat Pridgen eats alive any classic drummer. He can do anything they did, and more.

I'd like to hear something really funky by him instead of supper fast.

He's got a new band, I think it's a punk band... they're ok... He's young, we haven't seen the last of him. We'll see him again in some major new rock band, someone's got to snatch him up.

He's a genius drummer, though, for sure.

When drumming becomes an athletic event, it's being done wrong. I remember the first time I saw Billy Higgins play, up close. I was impressed by his economy of motion and the amount of sound and notes coming from his kit. It sure is easier on your body and keeps carpal tunnel at bay. People who play with proper technique play well until they die in their late '70. Joe Morrello, Art Blakey etc. Kids who thrash away at the kit don't last long. "It's better to burn out than fade away", is overrated.

Old School: Buddy Rich (and GoaT in my opinion)

Modern: Neil Peart (bonus points for sheer size of the drum kit :o)

One terrific drummer we could consider modern/contemporary is Danny Carey - a serious student of some of the greats mentioned thus far, as well as other unmentioned greats (and theory, in general). Danny is skilled and creative.

(bonus points for sheer size of the drum kit :o)

You should check out Terry Bozzio's current kit. :D

No finese or use of dynamics !
Try Carl Palmer, Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Billy Cobham , Ian Paice,

I looked real close and I don't see any tai chi finger cymbals with Bozzio's kit.
And Dale is still with him?  Jeez.
Nope, they got divorced.  Nevermind.

My dude? Where did I suggest that Danny was the greatest drummer in the world and everyone else can stuff it? Relax, dude! I'm quite familiar with the the names in your post just prior to the one quoted above - I'm in my 50s. This isn't a competition. Let's not take this thread in that direction, please.
