Good Speaker Match for NS-30/40?
« on: 3 Jun 2012, 10:17 pm »
Hi there Nightshaders:

I am wondering if anyone has any special speaker matches they would like to share. I know Blair's designed the NS line to be very adaptable with different types of speakers, but I am wondering, if, in people's experience, there are any particular matchings that stand out?

I'm particularly interested in experiences with high-sensitivity speakers -

Thanks!

NS-40 works nicely with Zu Omen Defs.

I have a NS-15 ordered and it will drive Klipsch Heresy III's. I'll post after it arrives. It will be 10 wpc with tube rectification.

I have several DIY speakers and I have found my tube rectified NS-10 to drive them all very well. What these speakers have in common is reasonably high sensitivity at around 90db/1w/ 1m and simple 2nd order crossovers.

With these same speakers my two NS-30's have lots of clean headroom, somewhat improved macro dynamics and more  bass punch over the NS-10. But the single ended NS-10's resolution, warmth and harmonic richness is so pleasing to listen to I use the NS-10 a lot. The first speaker featured (using all Vifa drivers) in the pics is warmer sounding and is a fantastic match with the NS-30. The floor standing Tri Trix (last set of pics) is especially nice with the NS-10 and ten watts has afforded more than enough listening volume in a small to medium sized room.

FYI .... My NS-30's have 12AU7s for gain and I have matched black plate Sylvania 12AU7s feeding 4 x 6AR6WA + tube adapters or 4 x 6P3S-E. For the NS-10 I use a tube adapter plus a NOS Sylvania 7N7 (= Sylvania 6SN7GT) for the gain tube, a Tung Sol 5U4GB rectifier tube and a pair of Russian 6P3S-E for the output tubes.

I can agree they were a stellar match for my Zu Omen Defs - with a couple tries with preamps (still haven't tried the beacon) it was a significantly better match than my Melody i2a3. Zu's take to a good tube sound very well. I also liked the winged C's for the NS-40 as well as the stock tubes.

For Zu some 300b's with something like 40 watts would probably be one of my favorite matches as well. Too bad they only put out 9 watts. Zu needs some Juice if you listen to genres that require top to BOTTOM dynamics.

Thanks,
Sam

I haven't had a chance but I also think I would love to try some Omega speakers with them. I have my eye on the new 5" driver  :green:

I have been needing to downsize into my new place. :)

I have Omega's new line (Hoyt Bedford) Type-2 speakers (http://www.hoytbedfordspeakers.com/Type-2.html); these are 97dB and 8Ohms. I'm driving these with a 15W/ch amp and it's more than enough (never been above 1/2 on the dial). They are very sleek (11" footprint at 40" tall). Unfortunately, I need to part with them because I need monitors for my space. These have a premium finish so they were $1950. I will sell for $1350. Interested?

Hi ProCast99 and all Audio Circle members.

I have a Niteshade Audio NS-10 (Tube rectification) 10wpc
and a Decware SE-84C+ SET 2wpc.

I have a pair of GR Research V1 (98db) and two pairs of V2 (94db) and a pair of
Audio Nirvana from Common Sense Audio, they are 8" full range in OB at 96db.

The 96 and 98db spaekers can be driven by the Decware 2wpc with limited head room, but my NS-10 can drive everything without any problem.

Of course a NS-SE20 or NS-40 would be ideal, but I am happy with my NS-10.

In addition, Blair offer main up grade options.

Don't forget, Niteshade Audio amplifiers are Made in USA

Hope this help.
