Hello:

I am using, quite happily, an NS-30 amp with an upgrade that allows me to switch between tube and solid-state rectification.

I turn the unit off before making the change, make the change, then turn it back on again. I have found, however, that about 5 sec after I switch from tube rectification to ss, a bright flash happens in the top part of my tube - a Svetlana 5U4G.

Is this "flash" a problem? It almost seems like a capacitor discharging or something...

I've only tried it twice, and I think I'll stick with tube rectification for now, until I hear differently.. wouldn't want to wreck that tube!

Any insights would be much appreciated!

I have found that tube rectifiers will sometimes flash if they're turned off and then back on before the tube is totally cool. You can hot switch between tube and solid state rectification with no ill effects.
