She was an important contributor to the American Renaissance.

Contrast it with the deterioration we are watching now. Too bad we let go of our labor unions.

Wow, the loss of an icon.

My first Aretha album was "Soul Sister" made back in the day when her managers still thought she should try to capture the world of sixties style pop music by singing standards. I recall thinking, "Wow, what a voice. She could sing anything". Over the years she proved it, even substituting for Pavarotti on a Puccini aria. Very glad she lived a full life and became the Queen of Soul where she could earn an excellent living while making millions of us happy every time we heard her. RIP, Ms Franklin.

"And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest"

Early B.

My first memory of great music was an Aretha album.

Mine too!

My first pre-recorded reel to reel tape purchased was "I never loved a man the way I love you". (1967 ish)
Played on a Roberts 770x (which I still have).

If you haven't already seen it, watch Aretha at the Kennedy Center Honors doing 'Natural Woman'. (YouTube has it). Even in her 70's, she could still blow  all of today's posers right off the stage,

Last night I played a minty double album of Aretha's greatest hits and toasted her with a glass of wine.  RIP.

I also played an album for Elvis since he also passed on August 16th (1977).

Steely Dan - "Hey Nineteen" - Gaucho 1980

Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember
The Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The Soul Survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old

While I love that performance and Aretha, I don't think she blows away everyone off the stage.  She has (had) a great voice, but other women have great voices, too.
