Title: Name this active monitor
Post by: jsalk on 11 Jan 2016, 09:56 pm
We've been working on a series of active speakers here at the shop.  This is the first in this series.

Here is a picture...

We'll fill in all the details shortly, but for now, we need a name for this series of speakers.  Any ideas are welcome.

Now, we don't have an ad budget.  So there are only two things we can offer for the person who suggests a name we eventually adopt.

First, we'll send you a Salk Sound hat in your choice of black or white (or both if you insist).

Second, you'll feel the pride of having made a positive contribution to the success of a great series of speakers.

So let the ideas flow...

- Jim

The Salk Slam.

Might be a little over the top for a monitor, but it mirrors some of the alliteration I see in the naming convention today, and it also tries to infer a different experience (which folks who own active speakers often rave about).

Nice looking set, good luck Jim!

Salk Solo Series or Salk Sovereign Series

Speakers can be named Solo 1, Solo 2, or Sovereign 1, 2, etc.

Given the recent time of year and the exterior tint that doesn't add color to the sound, and it's the sole solution-    how about the Solestice (or Soulstice if that isn't taken)?

Can't wait to hear more details on it!

My guess is powered, with the amps in one speaker and the other passive, since only one speaker in the photo has controls on the front.

This is a fully active design with a plate amp in each speaker.  The left speaker is the master and the right is the slave, which is why there are only controls on the left speaker.  It is also remote controllable. I'll try to post more details later today (if I get time).

I use internally bi-amped speakers, btw.  The delivery of waveforms from each driver is time aligned in their active crossovers so they can arrive simultaneously in time.  Made by Meridian in the UK.  Been pretty happy with these bad boys for a lotta years.  They disappear.  Images are cohesive and palpable.  Space invites.

Their names?  Starships?  Portals of something?  Man, I'm terrible at this , but congrats Salk and best wishes.

Hey Jim,

Nice.

I was thinking computer speakers but may be a little too big?

They may be depending on your setup.  We are thinking about a smaller speaker for this application.  Of course, it would not play very deep in comparison.

Quote
Are you using analog or digital crossover?

Digital.

Volume control?

Digital

Quote
What digital files can it recognize?

PCM

Quote
Is there an ADA for analog input ?

Yes, this is required since it utilizes a digital crossover.

Title: Re: Name this active monitor
Post by: JLM on 18 Jan 2016, 10:50 pm
OK, now that we've clarified that this monitor is active, I'll suggest a simple/different name to establish a new direction among Salk speakers to express it's no nonsense design: Salk A2.6 (active, 2-way, 6 inch woofer).  Future versions can be designated as Salk A2.6(2), Salk A2.6(3), etc.  Smaller versions can be called Salk A2.4, larger ones Salk A2.8.  And it makes for a easier way to identify/remember various models.  Of course names can still be used for the passive designs.

Active designs have huge advantages: much more dynamic; flat frequency response (as shown above) helps simply "make sense" of what is heard; bass is unbelievably deep/full.  The low voltage crossover losses less energy, can be more accurate, and more sophisicated (incorporating DSP).  Amps sense/react better to a simpler load and can be optimized to the driver/cabinet loading.  Speaker designer is in a better position to shop for the best amp/driver pairings than the consumer.

16 years ago auditioned Paradigm Studio 20 ($800/pair 2-way stand-mounts) versus Active 20 ($1600/pair, same drivers/cabinet).  It was no contest.  Passersby were gobsmacked.  Bass matched the Paradigm Studio 100 ($2000/pair, 3-way, 4 driver, floor-standers) but imaged better.  Unfortunately audiophiles have been turned off by the whole concept.

I congratulate Jim on this move and hope it becomes a success.

Post by: johzel on 18 Jan 2016, 11:09 pm
For this speaker I'd just go: "Salk PM" (powered monitor).  As a part of the "Salk Active Series".
Title: Re: Name this active monitor
Post by: JLM on 19 Jan 2016, 12:05 am
Keep in mind that the distinction between active and powered is significant.  Powered speakers are similar to passives, just with a speaker manufacturer selected amp built into one of the speakers.  They have none of the other performance advantages of active designs (some of which I listed above).

Active schematic:  preamp > crossover > amps > drivers

Powered schematic:  preamp > amp > crossover > drivers

Passive schematic:  preamp > amp > crossover > drivers   (same as powered)

In fact I'd say powered speakers are at best a wash compared to passives:

Powered - save buying another component and have more knowledgable amp selection;

Passives - the amp may not be as good as what you'd buy (and fat chance it could be a tube amp), one speaker has speaker wire twice as long as normal while the other one has a very short one, and the amps are located in the highest vibration location possible.

I use an all active home theater in a 9.5.1 Auro 3D setup. The manufacturer sells both active and passive versions of each model. The active versions go around 10-20 hz lower than the same passive model versions. I also like taking the guess work out of having to pick an amp. Each speakers drivers have their own amplification. It would cost $$$ to bi-amp or tri amp14 speakers, plus all of the additional rack space.
As for a name what about Salk Power?

This is what I use in my home theater, I use 4 Active 40's as L-R and surrounds, the Active CC, the Active ADP's as wide channels and 4 Active 20's as front and back height channels. This is one audiophile who is very happy. Unfortunately these speakers are out of production and I wish Jim the best of success with his new line.

I propose Salk "Streamline" to capture the essence of the new active series.

"Salk Sequel" - This model continues the Salk Story of developing quality speakers and they expand Salk's earlier lines(s) of speakers.

Yeah, why does a machine need a name anyway?

Coming up with all these names reminds me of naming paint colors or medications.  What are those guys drinking, shooting, sniffing, etc.?

Several months ago heard a interview on NPR from a consultant who's profession was to name drugs.  He said their goal was to come up with a name that was easy to pronounce/spell/remember.  Really??

What about?  THE BIRD SONG's OR  SALK's BIRD SONG's

Couldn't think of another name that could possibly add any more confusion to the lineup!

SongBird and BirdSong?

Then you could add TowerSong and ScapeSound.  ;)

Since you've ignored my previous brilliant, best choice suggestions, I'll try again.

Let's see ... diminutive but powerful with a lot of kick and slam .. I know! Call them the Salk Chuck Norris Specials! ... oh wait, that's stupid.

Ok, then how about the Salk Bantams?

Salk-Norris ?

I do not get this reference. Klas is Salk spelled backwards, and is meant to reference class, as in 1st class or classy.

Same here.
Maybe compile the list of suggested names and make a sticky post.

Well, following the Veracity line, these could be in the Salk Vivacity line as the Salk Vivacities

Well, this has been going on for some time now and it is probably time to unveil our choice.

There were some very nice ideas here and we went around and around evaluating all the options.  There were a few individuals who contacted us to say that we should not call them "powered" speakers, but "active" speakers.  So, for a while, we tried to work with a name that indicated the active nature of the design.

But in the end, we wondered if some prospective customers would even know what an active speaker was.  The term "powered" seemed to communice the most important aspect of the design for these individuals.  So, in the end, we returned to a name that clearly communicated the powered aspects of these monitors.

Here is the name we finalized...

Congratulations to sfox for recommending the name.  Hat's off to him (literally)!

Thanks to everyone who participated in this thread.  Greatly appreciated.
