Cornet II enough gain for Denon DL 103 Cart?
« on: 9 Nov 2006, 05:26 am »
Ive Cornet II phono stage would like to get a Denon DL 103 cart. The Denon output is .3 mV, does the Cornet II has enough gain without using stepup transformer? I'm using Cyrus Brenneman Cavalier Plus intergated amp with Cornet II.  :thumb: :thumb: :(

What the hell does "a" and "c" mean in your poll? Can you translate this into "Yes, needed" ot "No, it has sufficient gain"?

Confused,
Bob

you need more gain. The Cornet is @ 44dB @ 47k ohms.
60dB at least and the option to change load.

You will need a step-up tranny with the Cornet II when using a cartridge with an input like DL-103r, .4mv. This is more so true when you will load the Denon according to its impedance specified by the manufacturer.  Also, the tranny you need should have a ratio of more than 1:20.   Godspeed.

Yes, you'll need the step-up.  Best way to get good sound and low noise.  I'd start with 1:10 ratio at first, use the 1:20 only if you need it.

Hi Jim

I too have a low output MC cartridge and wondered if there was particular step up transformer that you have found suits the Cornet.

Thanks

Many of us have found the Lundahl step-up kit to be a good match.

The Lundahls at ten to one sound great between the DL103 and the Cornet.

1) I used a Denon 103R with my Cornet.  Needed a step-up, used the Lundahls.  1:20 was too hot, 1:10 worked fine, so I would start there

2) The Lundahls are fine transformers for the money, and I would recomend them for those on a budge.  If you have more cash available, the Stevens and Billington trannies are in a whole other leauge (but cost four times as much.)  That's what I used now.  Also, David Slagel here in NYC handmakes his own step-ups, and supposedly they best the S and Bs!  Will have to try them at some point soon.

If you are watching cash, the Lundahls are pretty darn good, though.
