Claudio Abbado gone at age 80
« on: 21 Jan 2014, 02:03 am »
Sad news in the world of classical music today.  Claudio Abbado passed away today at the age of 80.  I always enjoyed his work as a conductor.  He will be missed.

Listening to his Mahler 9th right now, seems appropriate.  What a great conductor he was.

MPR has been playing pieces throughout the day that were conducted by Abbado.  He was a wonderful conductor that really "got out of the way" of a piece and let the soul of the music shine through.

  • To whom more was given more will be required.
    • Never go to a psychiatrist, adopt a straycat or dog. On the street they live only two years average.

I had the opportunity to play Mahler's 4th with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Abbado while a student at the Curtis Institute of Music.  Maestro Abbado also conducted the Curtis Orchestra on several occasions.  He will be very much missed by both musicians as well as concert goers around the world.
