As we start to populate the Low Wattage System area, here is an area to post Images of your TOTAL SYSTEM. Must include speakers, amp and source at min.
Lets keep it going...

If the controller can turn this in to a sticky gallery that would be great.....

(Low wattage system)
Hi all Audio Circle members.
I think I can be a full time member of the low wattage system club.
My (Humble) system, consisting of the following:
(From left to right)
Rega P3 turntable
Rega Exact mm cartridge
Bellari VP-129 phono pre-amp.
Niteshade Audio NS-10 Integrated amplifier (10wpc)
6SN7 triode (Motorola & Radio Schack)
6L6WXT+ pentode connected (Sovtek and Electro-Harmonix)
5U4GC Ruby rectifier.
Rega Apollo CD player.
Decware SE84C+ SET amplifier (2wpc)
Triode 6922 No name ?
Pentode (Triode connected) EL84EH Electro-harmonix
Rectifier 5U4GB RCA (Got that NOS free from a friend.)
Speakers (One one shown) GR Research N3 (Modified)
Enclosures made in Vietnam and covered with vinyl wood imitation by myself.
(Shelving system) Furniture made in Vietnam, it was our bedroom dresser but I decided to move it up-stair in {{{{ MY }}}} penthouse.
The pair of PAudio 12” coaxial drivers you see on the shelves are from my GR Research V1 that are waiting for their new home, to be built in the months to come. (OB with H frame for GR Research 2X 12” servo subwoofers.)
Close up of my Decware SE-84C+
The grey box on the right is a step-down transformer for my 120V. SE-84C+ and the light yellow fan is to blow 34C/95C+ air
to cool down everything and it does a pretty good job.
Close up of my Niteshade Audio NS-10
I have up-graded the main power switch with a nice looking red rocker heavy duty switch.
I have also up-graded the volume control know with something more sexy.
I still have to up-grade the two positions input toggle switch,
It has a too industrial look for a white amplifier chassis.
My GR Research N3 speakers.
They are sealed type.
My second system for ambient music with low solid state heat and low wattage (15wpc).
Sony AM/FM – CD player and amplifier combo.
Sony 3-1/2” - 2 ways speakers with a (Believe it or not) 3” subwoofer with passive radiator.
Sony belt drive automatic turntable with MM cartridge and built in phono amplifier.
Shelving by IKEA Canada and a step down transformer to power everything on 120V.
That’s my two low wattage audio systems.
Nothing extraordinary, but all paid for.
(No home theater yet,
when I get back to Canada in 2013 or 2014.…)

Hi Wardsweb and all Audio Circle members.
May I ask a few questions?
What are the two (wood) boxes on each sides of the amplifier?
Are the drivers Lowether?
What's the efficiency of the speakers?
Look as if the back of the speakers is a seperate section ?
May we get a closer look at the amplifier?
So many questions and hopefully, many answers.

Hi Quiet Earth and all Audio Circle members.
No beer, no boose (Alchool), a sip of wine and for this special occasion
(For me anyway) some champagne...
Did you know that after meeting my wife for the first time,
only 15 days later, we were engaged !
That's fast enough to be in the Guinness world wide reccord book.
She marry me because I did not smoke,
I did not drink
and I did not play cards for mone
and last, but not the least,
because at the time I had money, lots of it.
Now it's not the case anymore,
because I've lost my mind when I saw her for the first time
and I gave her all my money.
No joke, it's the thruth, I swear on my mother's head.

I like those :thumb: would like to know more. Are you using any passive crossover's or does the MiniDSP take care of that. I awesome you're bi-amping. What are you crossing the Alnico tweeter at ?
I had a JBL 2245H in an 8cf vented box back in the 80's. What a beast that was.......
-
Signal flow is: Decware Pre -> MiniDSP. X-Over LR4 @ 800 Hz splits to the 2226J woofers and 2445J 2" Comp drivers in 250 Hz Tractrix horns.
So mini DSP is doing the x-over. Super tweeters (which can't be seen in the picture, i need to build a little shelf for them so they clear the horns, are being crossed over passively at 16 kHz LR 2.
The 2" drivers run out of gas at 14 kHz or so, so it was a natural point to add some sparkle there with the 2405 super tweeters. The 300B amp is powering the 2" drivers and super tweeters. A rotel 1050b is driving the woofers. Woofers are in a 4 cu FT box tuned to 45 Hz.
-
(which can't be seen in the picture)
Thought I was missing something. Send up some additional pics here or to your gallery if you can.
-
Great job my friend.

Will-do. Going to have a chance to tweak the x-over and do so measurements today hopefully.

Here is an old system I had using Hornshoppe Wannabee clones, sunfire sub, Cayin EL34 pp amp that was transsexual in that it could also be a low powered SET using one output tube per channel. Also had a Sun 300 B that was highly modded in the system for a while.

VERY cool, merdy! I love the speaker rig. Have you experimented with many of the Altec large format horns, or "just" the 1005s?
-
thanks Redboy, yes i have many many horns,1803,1505,803,203b,mantaray ,511 etc, the best ones that worked in my room size was the 1005 and 203b ,the big boys while amazing i would get some wall reflection so i would plug some socks in the outside cells
my next plan

It's good to have a plan. :)
Ever experiment with the 32A? I seem to have acquired a pair of 'em, am considering chasing down some appropriate drivers and pairing them with some 414s. My goals aren't quite as ambitious as yours apparently, but the 1505s do have a certain inexplicable allure to me...

Same amp and DAC and speaker drivers (Lowther PM5A and Eminence Beta 15), but new bass amp (Crown XLS1500), Placette Audio passive RVC and Nelson Pass speaker design. Best sound yet.

Could you offer more details about the slot loaded OB? It really looks like something I would like to try.
-
That OB/RiPole looks pretty cool!
Also, what's that coming down the wall at twelve o'clock?
-
Can you get them out away from the wall more?
-
There's a quote, but no reply.
-
Also, what's that coming down the wall at twelve o'clock?
Water meter?
-
Ok, yea. That's what I was thinking too!
-
Roscoe: If you back up this thread a few months, you'll see my previous OB set up... long story short... I wanted a simpler look than I had, so I found this new OB design while surfing online, it's something Nelson pass came up with at the Burning Amp 2013 Festival. I really liked the one piece compact design and thought I'd give it a whirl. I can't tell you much of the technical side other than the woofer fires into a slot that vents out the front of the speaker so the front chamber is much smaller than the rear chamber. Google search "Nelson Pass slot loaded bass" and you'll know what I know. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Bob: It's the main water line/meter into my house. I'm located in a semi finished basement and it's the only spot for me.
-
Opnly: They're 3 feet out now, I tried about 4.5 feet and really can't tell much difference, beyond that, they're too close to me, so this seems to be best.
Apologies: The previous pics of my system from last year was when I had it in a spare bedroom and it was simply too small to ever sound right. They're not shown in the previous pics, but I used two H Frame bass units driven by plate amps. The slot loaded bass with the Crown amp have proven to be much superior. But the heart of the system remains the 2A3 SET amp + Lowthers which is why I posted it here. Sorry for any confusion.
-

I'd love to hear the system, it certainly "looks" like it would sound good.
You could cover the pipe with some eye-catching absorption or diffusion thing (that was hinges to gain access to the meter). Personally, I'd fixative on the pipe. But I totally understand dealing with the cards your dealt. The best part, is that you have a cool system. The rest is just icing on the cake.

Fantastic job my friend. Thought about getting a Crown for my Alphas since they're on close out. Do you find the Crown a big improvement over your plate amps?
-
Thanks Paul. I can't say its a huge difference, but I grew tired of needing to adjust the eq on my plate amps to sound right and one of the plate amps developed a nagging low level popping sound, so the opportunity presented itself to buy another plate amp or try out the Crown. The Crown is a "set it and forget it" device. I set the low pass to 165 Hz, and adjusted the volume to match my Lowthers and I'm done, all in one convenient package.

Do you would inform us how is its sound comparing to the regular upright position?

hi Redboy yes i have used the 32 a and b ,they are great and the best part is that they are time aligned,i once heard a tower around 4cuft with 2 10 inch altecs and a 32 with a 802 it was sick in a nyc apartment
here is what i built over last week to install in my friends store, still tweaking it for next week ,4 mcm pro woofers and an evdh2a in a b stock first octave horn crossed at 600 hz total cost so far around $700 testing with a sansui quad amp ,perfect for biamping

Wow! Beautiful system, listening room, art, furniture, cabinetry, refreshments bar ....everything. :thumb:
BTW what brand is the listening chair?
-
Spectacular room!
Is your coffee table really what it appears to be? 8)
-
Thanks for the compliments guys!
Re the chair. It's called a Corona chair and we stumbled into it at a Scandinavian furniture that was closing down. It's amazingly comfortable, but perhaps a bit delicate as a full time listening chair.
Re the coffee table. If you mean the temporary amp stand, yes it's temporary but has worked well so far. I'm using isolation under the amps and have noticed any noise or microphonics.
What I will say is that the way these horns unpack sound into a room is simply unreal. I didn't think that it would sound good with the Oris back in the corners, and spent a few days moving them around. At the end of the day, this is where they worked best. They act/sound like a massive, horn loaded, point source.
-

In the final image you posted, it appears the "coffee tables" have ports on top. They look like large subwoofers.
In hindsight, I think they're coasters.

Lol.. Yeah, those are coasters.
Amy would probably "Brain" me if those were subs. :nono:

Arthur,
Coming from you, I'm really flattered. You probably don't remember me, but a number of years back, I had the honor and pleasure of attending one of your getogethers.
It was all VAC front end, LS9s, some prototype stats, and Danny was demoing his V1s and Dodd battery powered gear downstairs. It's safe to say that the "bar" was strapped to a rocket and fired into the sun that day. I only hope to end up with a room like that some day.
Cheers!
Gabe

Old school meet new school. On the debate of pairing 3 wpc amp with 93db speakers. I took the plunge and found the combo, especially with the 45, magical. Not for everyone (what is). This was 15 years ago and the pairing has principally caused me to get off the upgrade bandwagon and just listen to music again. The only changes since were dac upgrade and transitioning from physical media.

After living with a few 45 SET tube amplifiers over the last 12 years and a few different low-priced wide-range drivers for my Open Baffle speakers, I threw caution to the winds and purchased the Lowther Alnico 8" 16 Ohm, PM5A drivers, actually the Ticonal version of the Alnico magnet which has the addition of Titanium in the metal mix, a favorite of Nelson Pass, and the 2-watt Yamamoto A08S 45 SET tube amplifier. I purchased the Yamamoto directly from Shigeki Yamamoto in Japan, and had him install a 15 Ohm output transformer to match the Lowther's 16 Ohm impedance. The media is from a Spotify app streaming on the original iPad mini. I select the highest bit depth. The bass is my old 15" Eminence Alpha 15A driven by the 7 watt TBI Millenia. The Preamplifier is the 'Passive' Lightspeed Attenuator designed by George Stantschef in Australia, which uses Optocouplers LED's.
The Lowther's are about 98 db sensitive, depending on who measures it. So the 2 watts of the Yamamoto A08S, even preceded by a passive preamplifier, is enough to fill my 20' x 28' room with rich fully-saturated sound. The recent addition of the EML Mesh Plate 45's (I have 75 hours on them so far) have pushed the performance to a stunning new level that allows Deborah and I to experience recorded music dangerously close to a live event. Present, tonally rich, transparent, nicely realized textures, dynamic and thanks to the Alnico/Ticonal Magnet, relaxed. This 'system' is the essence of simple and the baffles are small, only 33" high x 23" wide.

I harvested these 12" Zenith 49CZ802 alnico drivers ( circa 1958 ) from an old tube console several years ago and they were collecting dust in my garage until I read the "Glow In The Dark" blog below. Paired with my 2a3 SET or even the Volt+ TPA3118 class D, the SQ of these wide band sleepers is jaw dropping. For the time being the Lowther OB's on the opposite side of the room are taking a bit of a back seat to these geriatric wonders. The 49CZ series can be found on eBay for around $30 a pair, that is until the word gets out.

Thanks Opnly Bafld. The deeper I descend into the mysteries (if not the vagaries) of the art of home audio, the more I become aware of the subjective nature of all of this. The value of the DIY (in my case Open Baffle) approach is to give us an opportunity to come a little closer to a 'sound' that is congenial to the music we listen to. I thought I knew what I was looking for, but my present 'system' has taught me that I need to continue to learn as I go along. When the music comes dangerously close to sounding 'real' the heart takes flight and the emotions soar.
A point of possible interest about Alnico magnets: they are affected and have a tendency to lose their magnetic charge by temperature extremes, by being dropped and by age. In the early days of audio, 1940's and 1950's, when Alnico magnets ruled, re-charging was a wide spread practice. There is still at least one company that continues to re-charge in the US.
With Warmest Friendship ~ Richard
-
Nice simple 'system' Emil. I have a love affair with 'horns' but have never had the chance to work with them yet. Perhaps in the future. The Lowther's are considered at least a partial horn speaker.
Nice Open Baffle design Poultrygeist. I once worked with larger drivers and know how rich they sound. On voice they are incomparable.
Oh yes, after reading several interesting posts about using thin solid-copper magnet wire for speaker cabling, I purchased a roll of cheap 14 gauge wire from Ace ($12 for 100ft.). That is what I am using now, a single thin solid-copper wire from the Yamamoto to the Lowther's and the sound is remarkable.
~ Richard

I wonder why current Alnicos dont have anymore the good sound as this wonderful Zenith 49?
What kind of paper cone it use?
-
The Zenith 49CZ*** uses a recessed ribbed paper cone which is said to be the inspiration for the highly collectable Diatones.
-
Thanks for the nice image, I mean say what type of paper?
(kenaf,couche,bouffant,bufom,bristol,chinê,matte,cote,kraft,hemp etc)
Do you think the ribbed cone do the good sound alone?
-
The robust cone material is nothing exotic and the type paper used I haven't a clue. There's no surround so if reforming was ever needed it could be a challenge.
To be 60 years old they've held up extremely well.
-
I think the surround is the same material as the cone and could last forever, with careful handling.

The suspension is part from the cone, as used in the old days, most current FR have a cloth suspension fully doped.
The famous PHY-HP also use a paper non doped suspension.

Looks like these are different drivers than 49cz852. How do they sound?
The 852's are identical to the 803's which are older ( 1957 ). I painted the ugly beige gaskets black which make them look different.
The Zeniths are some of the best wide band drivers I've heard and I've owned some good ones.

My system includes Heathkit AS-21 Legato speakers which are essentially Altec 9800 studio monitors with dual woofers and a horn in a furniture cabinet. Each speaker has two Altec 414 –A woofers, an Altec 811 horn, Altec 806 driver and Altec N-800-F crossovers rebuilt with PIO caps and L-Pads. They are being driven with DIY monoblock Radiotron 300b amps.

While the bucket subs are true subs and go lower I've switched to OB woofers which are more accurate. With OB woofers and open back tweeters you can call this a hybrid set up.

Correction..It was late when I posted this as a S.E.T. amp when it is a Pentode Stereo single ended power amp using SEDCTR circuit technology by Paul Joppa
All pentode tube complement – 2x6AU6 and 2xEL84
Two stage direct coupled circuit with no global negative feedback
4 watts per channel, strappable to create an 8 watt parallel single ended monoblock amp... Carry on.
-
Upstairs system has now morphed to include Klipsch Forte IIIs and a few different SET amps. I have a TAL Korneff Type 45 (2 watts), an Eleket 2a3/300b amp (4 watts or 8 watts depending on tubes used), and an Almarro A318B which runs 6c33c tubes in SET mode (18 watts). In the pic is the Almarro which is my go-to amp at the moment.
Note, this is my 2nd system which is set up for more "rock out" moments with my 12 year old daughter who loves music about as much as I do (maybe more!). The main system is downstairs in the garden level basement in a dedicated room with lots more room treatments.

Hey!
Man! That's a nice first post there. Welcome to AC. Love those Oris horns. I actually thought about getting them back then, but they were a bit out of my budget, more complicated than I would want and more importantly I didn't have enough space for them in my NYC's apartment :icon_lol:
Anyway, some great looking low power systems here :thumb:

Yep... funny, I have been toting around the BD-15 woofers for about 12 years from house to house. Earlier this year I contacted Bert and he actually had a pair of 150 horns ready to go but tried to get me to go 200 or even better the Orphian dual horn driver. But it was the Oris-150 back in the day that got me interested in horn speakers - got very close to buying the Moondog (based on the Oris 150) from Welborn at a THE show in Vegas long ago. I really dont have the space for them either but here they are and frankly sound quite good using the new Voxativ AC-2.6 8" full range driver.

Thanks to my good friend James Burgess one of my dream amps was personally delivered last night and is making beautiful music in my home. It's a custom 45/2A3 S.E.T. amp from James (1wpc and 3wpc respectively) with output transformers built especially for this project by Jack Elliano. The chassis is from a 1936 Wurlitzer jukebox. We hooked it up last night and I am glad James only lives 30 minutes from me because he's not often able to listen to his wonderful amplifiers in the customers home systems only in his shop before shipping them out worldwide so this was a treat for both of us. I will just say that it was a moment that did not disappoint. I have known James for over 13 years now and I am very happy to have really got to know him as a person as well as having a chance to own his beautiful creations.

Some upgrading as of late. Current reference setup with the James Burgess 45/2A3 S.E.T. amplifier, easily interchangeable to Burgess Eiclone 6550 triode monoblocks. A James Burgess tube preamp/phono stage, PeachTree Audio 65SE (serving as DAC), Modified AT1240 TT with AT33EV cartridge and Cardas wiring straight to the Burgess phono stage. Media is also served up via an Otari MTR10-2, Teac 1040Sl, Akai 280D-SS and Akai X-150D Reel to Reel machines, a PC music server with over 25 terabytes of Hi-Rez files, and plenty of great vinyl selections. All playing through a pair of 105db efficient Klipschorn loudspeakers with an 18” Velodyne sub crossed over around 40Hz. Room is 24x20x8.

I posted my home system about two weeks ago, right before I left the city. After about a week I realized I couldn't do without music. Last weekend I managed to find these very cool speakers for free on CL, picked them up in the driveway without ever meeting the owners. When I opened them up they turned out to be Goodmans Axiette II 8's, terrific full-range drivers from the 50s, I'm guessing 94db. Drove back home to pick up this little integrated that runs on an old Soviet version of the 807.
Hope everyone's staying safe.

Goodmans Axiette II 8…little integrated that runs on an old Soviet version of the 807.
I love it when scores like that happens, people pushing out old stuff with no idea of the actual inherent value. Goos for you. Can you post closer up pictures please?

...old stuff with no idea of the actual inherent value.
I don’t know that they are worth this much, but the seller does: https://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649424046-goodmans-axiette-ii-8srarest-of-rare/
From this old brochure, the cabinets may be original Goodmans, $27 for just the driver (not all that cheap in 1960): https://www.americanradiohistory.com/hd2/IDX-Site-Technical/Archive-Catalogs-IDX/IDX/Allied/Allied-Catalog-1960-OCR-Page-0073.pdf
This wikipeadia page has a nice colour picture, and the driver above could well be sporting one of my phase plugs, or one inspired by, in it.

I own a pair of Triaxiom 212 from the same page. Adjusted for inflation those drivers retailed for almost $700 each in 2020 dollars. The Axiette’s were the entry level 8” speaker from Goodmans and was roughly equivalent to the Altec 755. The Axiom 80 was in a whole different league.
The Goodmans drivers were very high quality, and I have heard that they were made in the Tannoy factory (maybe). They are beautifully made, very efficient (about 97 dB for the 212), and the frames are painted a beautifully automotive grade metallic enamel.
-
...Axiom 80...
I have a single Axiom 100 downstairs.

It was a lucky find. The ad said that one of the speakers wasn't working, but it turned out the lamp cord they were using had frayed, both speakers work perfectly.
Here's a picture of the back of the driver, and another of the cabinet. Haven't figured out a way to access the front of the driver without taking everything apart.
I also managed to grab a copy of the full brochure for the Axiettes on ebay, with specs and cabinet suggestions, which I'm happy to send photos of to anyone interested (I'm assuming this isn't the place to post them).
Thank you, Dave, for those links. I've been looking at planet10 as I begin to think about what cabinets they should go into. I can also try to get a better picture if you're interested. It's nice to have a bit of that Tannoy flavor, I miss mine.

Closer look suggests that is a diy box. These drivers predate T/S so to do a proper box would require measuring them.
To get to the front i expect those decorative pieces hide staples holding the cloth in place. These were often monted from the rear of the cutout, if so it should be possible to remove the screws/bolts holding them in and pull the driver.
You do probably want to ensure that the front of the drive rlooks fine.

Damn charlieboy, you do NOT mess around!

Eliptrac smooth wooden horns are serious, and ALK knows and understands all Klipsch!
Great work on your system design.
Best,
Anand.

Years of patience has finally paid off. Custom built amps, preamp, and speakers rounded out the rest of the components and the full room treatment was long overdue. Only thing still in the works are a couple turntables that are getting full restorations.

Hi Charlie,
Do you could inform us on the details of these open reel tape decks and how you purchased them?
The main decks I use weekly are two TEAC a3340s models and an Otari MTR-10.

One of the TD-124 tables is together and though not fully restored as it could be it is enough that it's running great! The other ( with a black plinth, Ortofon RMG-212 tonearm, and Ortofon S 15-M/T both rebuilt to new standards) will be put in the system once everything returns from STS. It's time for a custom rack for the tables. :)

He has retired from doing the EdHorn?
I have plans. But Fh1 is better and FH3 considerably better. Ed’s horn is very dated from a time before really good modelers..

Plain black Tubelab Simple Single Ended EL34 Amp triode wired single-ended amplifier designed by George Anderson. This amplifier has a beefier power supply than usually offered in the basic design and, Obbligato coupling caps, Kiwame and PRP resistors, and Transcendar Output transformers. It's not the prettiest amp but sounds very very good!

Maybe Terry’s enclosure but those drivers (FF225wk, maybe FF165wk), did not exist in Terry’s time. So these are a clone or have had a driver swap. And the FF225wk is usually used with a superTweeter.

Everything from 30hz to the supertweeters is fully on the fly adjustable from the listening position. Things just float around the room in a sometimes 360 degree audio presentation that disappears into a wall of sound that is deeper and wider by far than the actual dimensions of the room. It is the best audio I personally have heard. Organic, natural, unbloated, and just head bobbing/toe tapping audio joy.

Thanks to the AC thread of years ago I'm still enjoying the Miniwatt S-1. Stock except for the diode mod and 6AQ5 tubes its 2.5 watts sound wonderful driving the 98 db Zenith alnico open baffles. At my house amps and speakers come and go but these are the one constant.

I an well familiar with the Halcyons, i provided EnABLed & matched Alpair 10PeN for a couple pair and showed how they could be biamped — either Curt or Madisound said it couldn’t be done.
So yours are stock.
