As my two boys go through grade school there is a science fair every year.
Any ideas for projects for the younger person?
Just to through out some ideas (but not sure how to make a full report as of yet)
speaker driver cut a-way.
how a speaker works (with a signal or 9 volt)
more advanced with making a box:
what difference a port makes.
box size difference.

you guys have any more ideas/suggestions?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,
I'd try to pick your project to match what level your boys are at.  If they are very young, perhaps simply understanding that sound is the result of vibrations.

Or perhaps record sound on aluminum foil- like Edison.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBOoy6jeBI8&feature=related

If they have a bit of understanding of electricity and magnetism, perhaps make a speaker, winding a voice coil, glue it to a cone, using a permanent magnet, and feed a signal into it.  This video shows a very young girl that really seems to have a good understanding of what she is doing.  During my years as a science fair judge, the key to me was not the project itself as much as the level of understanding of principles shown by the student.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CxMm0ksJ8Y.
At a higher level, they could experiment with various cone materials, hypothesize about effects and issues related to each.
Keep us up to date as they proceed.  As a teacher, I have always thought that science fair was one of the best ways of getting kids really in touch with real science.

Those are some great ideas.  I especially liked the last one with the girl making a speaker.  She can wind a voice coil, hot glue and solder!   I will run these and a few others by the boys and see what they think.
Thanks, Scott.

Remember that what is really impressive about that girl is how articulate and knowledgeable she is.  Over the decades of judging, I saw too many projects that were great projects, but upon questioning, the kids didn't know their stuff.  We usually assumed that Mom or Dad had been the primary mover behind the project.  When my daughter won a regional fair many years back, it was probably because she understood the atomic nature of polar chemical bonds that allowed her to extract caffeine for her 8th grade project.  (It helped that her Dad was a chemistry teacher and spent several hours explaining it to her).

The site does have lots of interesting projects (sound related)

This sounds like a back handed way to get your kids to build you some bass traps.  I wish I had thought of that  :duh:

As an update CJ decided to do this project

It is making a speaker out of a Styrofoam plate.  You have to wind a voice coil around a magnet, glue in a crude suspension, hook it up to an amp and go.  We did our first prototype and it worked so we will be making a stereo pair for the science fair.  :D   Power by NAD.

Maybe an exhibit about comparing/contrasting analog phono reproduction vs. CD digital. Could have waveform poster, even put a TT vs. CD player with modest stereo setup.

Very cool.  Be sure to let us know how the science fair goes. Most importantly, did your kids have fun doing it?

MaxCast

set up the display at the science fair today.  Lots of cool projects from the kids.
Here is the styro speaker...in stereo and ipod ready.  :)
Not quite sure on the polarity so the gym may sound a little out of phase

Thanks for all the suggestions and I highly recommend you dads consider an audio project if you ever have the opportunity.
Christopher and I had a lot of fun.  He stripped the wires, wrapped the voice coil, glued it and even soldered the leads.
