hi  getting ready to buy the 170s; just want to check here is ask if my one. 2 with the 24w/80watt would be enough juice to drive them well in a 10x12 room? I use a trends pa10 tube preamp  thanks   Dan

The 80w is plenty for them although we're probably out of them.  The 340s are so sensitive that I can't turn up volume above 1/4 at my house.  170s are better matched in that respect - 1/2 is ear-splitting.

I believe the 80W's are not on the website anymore, we ran out of them 2 weeks ago. Anyway, the 130W is much better sounding in my opinion!

I've owned the CBM-170's from nearly the beginning and dearly love them.  They've done fine with as little as 8 wpc (Tripath).

Just to piggyback on a similar thought, I read the new and improved sensation manual last night (!) and am wondering about the warning regarding jamming out loud to rock music. . .

I listen to rock (and large orchestral music), and the note got me a little concerned.  Could someone provide a little more specific clarification?

Thanks!

Rock and loud is fine!!!!  I know of nobody who listens to the death metal that after 3 hours will smoke sensation on insensitive speakers.

I wasn't that impressed with the 170s, my preference in budget speakers would be for the TCA WAF-1, but Seth really liked the 170s so take your pick.

The 170 is a substantial bookshelf, virtually full-range in a small room.  That, and Donny doesn't know much, especially about women.

Well Jason's Sensation hasn't died yet!!! Slipknot, Disturbed, Apocalyptica, Ramstein more or less as loud as I can go without making the neighbors  (which is about a little past halfway up).

Janusz, I think it will be fine!!! We just don't recommend breaking in the Sensation with really loud heavy metal as it is a little rough to burn it in with.

Had the original 170's a couple of years ago. Good speakers for the money.  They should match the Virtue offerings well. Unless you are wanting to push the wax outta your ears, they should be fine for metal too.

One of my tests of a hi-fi system is to see how it can handle groups like: Insomnium, Kamelot, Killswitch Engage, Cradle of Filth, Parkway Drive, Epic, Children of Bodom, Nightwish, etc....

Cool.  Serves me right for reading the manual. . . :D

I'll go back to patiently waiting for my ship to come in. :)

Guys,
Sorry it's taking so long to receive amps.  We got pushed back 2 weeks on the last big batch due to a shortage of chokes on the Dodd buffer.  We got a mongo shipment last week and Gary is working 24x7 prepping them.
We've had a few cancellations.. hopefully most of you hang in there.  It was a once-in-a-lifetime sale (you now know the REAL reason why) and the units sound AWESOME.

Too bad some has cancelled, they are going to miss some of the best sound of their life.

This is AWESOME. :thumb:

The cancellations are probably former av123 fans like me that get nervous any time a purchased product doesn't immediately arrive.

And then when it does arrive, we mark the calendar with the 30 day return period, along with e-mail reminders, and purchase an alarm clock to go off as well.

Fortunately, my Sensation arrived before the urge to cancel hit me. Then for the first two weeks, I was A/B-ing with my old british integrated....saying to myself "sure it's a little better, but I'll probably return it"

And then this weekend, the wife and kids went out for an evening, so I cranked up the Sensation for some serious testing.

It really wasn't a hard decision. It's great. I'm keeping it.

Now try a 5751 tube. It gets even greater.

I laughed my head off reading the "sensation is doing something wrong" thread... thanks for that one S14 ;-)

Hey, it's not a perfect fit with every speaker but damn good with most!

well, guys....to bring the thread back to its original; I received the 170s yesterday and listend for a couple of hours.  they are an improvement over what i had ( klipsch B 2)more musical and more enjoyable to listen to:   the low end is more defined and the highs are sweet and not shouty.  depth seems improved i.e. front to back  and not near a forward as my old speakers.  tho, the 170s dont have the dynamics...yet?

It will be interesting to see how these burn in over the month.  I assume that new speakers are abit tight and will become more responsive as they loosen up    Dan
