BP 25 preamp volume sensitivity
« on: 11 Dec 2023, 10:44 am »
Situation as follows:

Metrum Onyx DAC connected using XLR to the BP25 preamp. BP25 connected using RCA to Class D Power amp.

When I use the remote for adjusting the volume I hardly have any margin between soft and loud.

Amplification of the signal is quickly too much. There should be more in between.

Anybody who can explain this? Maybe a solution for this problem?

my guess is that your dac is putting out more voltage than the bp-25 was designed to accept.  simple solution/quick fix is to reduce the output of your dac.

another potential option is the gain on your amp.  check and see if you can reduce the gain.

Thx for your suggestions.
As far as I can see both are not just simply adjustable with (dip)switches....

On the RCA cables (pre-amp to amp) you can try some Harrison Labs in-line attenuators. I have used these in a similar situation. Can order direct thru Harrison Labs. I suggest the 12 dB versions, or order a variety. The 3 dB version is actually quite subtle.

I found this topic:

This is now my problem too: https://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=111763.20

It's called bleeding.

I just ran into it when having new (higher sensitive) speakers.

On the power amp side I don't have a possibility to control the gain, so I don't know if another solution is available for me??

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have component mismatches.  It appears the only solution is to get amplification (pre and/or amp) with less gain and/or less sensitive speakers.

That would not be so fine...
