For me, this is the most exciting F1 season ever!
« on: 9 Jul 2012, 09:15 pm »
I won't spoil it for those who have recorded yesterday's race but haven't watched it yet.  The British F1 Grand Prix was another fantastic race.   In all the years I've been watching and reading F1 races (which are gazillions), there has never been this much excitement and unpredictability.  Stupid Fox sports had the pre-race and after-race on Speed.  Luckily I was home so I could flip the channels.

Glad to hear that F1 is finally exciting again.

I was an F1 fan for a decade or two, and only watched about 2 close races in that time frame.  The most exciting battles were Senna vs. Prost (on the same team).    My zeal started to fade after watching the Senna crash, followed by a decade of watching one driver/team/car run away from the field each and every race.

Perhaps I will record a few races and see if I can catch the fever again.

The racing is excellent now. I think the last race was the 8th new winner in 9 races, right? And there are still a good handful more who can realistically win this year.

Stable, spectator oriented FIA rules have helped, 6 world champions in the drivers field have helped, good tracks.

I hope you get the F1 fever again.  The Pirelli spec tires have a lot to do with the close racing.  So far none of the teams have completely solve the degradation cycle of the tires.

Senna and Prost were epic battles.  Did you see the film Senna?  Great movie.

I saw it at an art house theater and will be ordering the Blu-Ray. The old footage of Senna won't look any better but that is a movie I want to own.

And yes, this has been a terrific F1 season. I didn't get to watch the race until today and I purposely stayed away from any media that might contain the info, very glad I had no idea what was coming.

This USA Today interview of the filmmaker suggests that it is in true HD.

Beware of DVDs and BluRays being sold  on Amazon and elsewhere that are not coded for North American release and are Italian ot Portuguese language dubbed over the English film, and they have poor video quality.  The real BluRay disk for N.A. comes out today.

Ed, the SpeedTV and Fox shows are identical. Fox is the SpeedTV mothership. The Speed guys do ham it up a bit when on Fox, they know their audience is 10x bigger than usual. A few less off color jokes from Hobbo, less leftist bilge from Matchett, a bit more Vegas glitz from Varsha.  :thumb:  I don't like that the race is delayed to show at noon when airing on Fox, and also when the race runs long Fox panics, whereas Speed knows F1 is their top show and happy to run over.  Fox airs 4 races per year. I think Spa is the only one left this year?

I agree that F1 is having a great year.  One thing that I really like is all the blogs available going into the minute technical details about the cars.  You can actually learn a few things reading them

Then there is NASCAR this year.  Absolutely boring processions with the winner being determined by one car being at the head of the procession much like the lead car at a funeral.  Winner seems to be the one who's "tars" lasted the bested.  And as far as any useful technical information, there is zero -  nothing.  A team might admit that they found a few "thangs" but thats about it.  It is as much fun as watching "thangs" race.  Solid axles, but my goodness even fuel injection this year - -  only because the old carburetor mechanics have retired. No racing, no passing, and nothing happening for hours on end, only when the occasional fake yellow flag comes out to bunch them up again.  Hell, they even have fake headlights.  A drop of rain and they all run away.  Pretty pitiful.

Not to mention, real race cars don't have doors.

Watched Senna last night.  Very good movie for F1 fans.

Oddly, no mention of the Austrian flag that Senna had in his car that day (related to the death of Roland Ratzenberger in qualifying).  That would really have helped with framing Senna's state of mind on that fateful day, and would have made the ending of the movie even more dramatic.

I'm a Brazilian born the same year as Senna, I stayed up all night way back in 1988 to see Senna win his first F1 championship (as I was living in Brazil at the time and he won his F1 title in Japan).  I recently also watched the movie about his life, which was well done, and I could not help but got teary eyed.

After a break due to Varsha-itis, I watched the British GP and enjoyed it.  The racing was great and Varsha was merely a mild distraction.  The rule requiring two different tire compounds is stupid.

Senna was on Netflix awhile back, not sure if it still is but it was very, very good....amazing how much F1 has evolved. I was watching practice today for this weekends race and they were doing a lot in the garages due to the rain and the cars are Jets without Jet Engines and wings....the tech and construction/engineering is  so space age and sophisticated its awesome. I love it, always have...... :thumb:

Whoops,  Hamiltor leaves McLean to drive for Mercedes next year, taking Schumaker's ride.  I really wonder what is going on here, Mercedes only has one win in the past several seasons.  I guess I will have to cheer for Button next year.

Yeah, big shock for me.  Hammy has been with McLaren more than half his life.  Some of the F1 websites think Hammy went to Mercedes for 2014 when the engines will change drastically, so he wants to be there to help develop that end.
