You know sometimes it seems that a lower distortion speaker, especially one that is not compressing on peaks, can sound "quieter" than one that has higher levels of distortion, even though both are putting out the same SPL. Our brains probably get trained by loud and distorted amplified concerts, for example, to make this association. Just a hypothesis that I've noticed in my own listening.
