Can I access and control my 1st gen Apple TV with an Ipod Touch if I do not have a wireless network?

Is this as simple as downloading the Apple remote app to the Touch and just syncing it to the Apple TV?

I use the Apple TV as a music server only and physically connect it to my PC when I need to load music on to it.

Will any generation Touch do the job?

You need a wireless network for the iPod touch to control it, also the Apple TV needs to be either wired or wireless.   For those without the wireless network never fear, the remote that comes with the Apple TV is very usable, just with really large libraries, the Remote app provides a faster search.

Basic wireless routers are pretty inexpensive these days.
