Title: Introduction from Iowa
Post by: Dnelsd on 13 Mar 2023, 03:06 pm
Hello from Iowa USA.  I am retired and enjoying music more than ever before.

My system has changed over the years just like everyone.
Currently inside an antique upright Victrola cabinet resides a Technics direct drive turntable, an Onkyo A7 amp, a Parasound ZDAC, and Onkyo CD player.  Hand made braded cables connected to DCM A1 Time Windows. WIDE soundstage.

Looking forward to learning more about the musical hobby I enjoy.

Title: Looking for new sound
Post by: Dnelsd on 13 Mar 2023, 04:09 pm
I am looking to this site to help me narrow my search for a new sound.

I currently have DCM TimeWindows which have a nice wide sound stage which I like.  However I don't get that airy, around the notes or instruments that create the depth of a sound stage.  The hearing of one instrument in front or behind another.  I don't know if I am explaining this very well.

So I am looking to understand what type of speaker designs help create this sound.
Thanks

Só far I have found this only with the late Carver Amazing and a crossoverless FR driver as the Lii Audio F15.

If one have a woodworker is possible try the Lii Audio F15($399/Pair) 97dB/8Ω and benign impedance curve suited to OB or Bass Reflex box or the F18($540/pair), no Crossover, no Tweeter beaming, no Phase rotation, no driver sensitivity loss, no Harmonics loss, no Retail price.

We don't know your room but I would make sure you pull these out into the room away from the back wall. Also I do like my vintage speakers, but more modern drivers and tweeters do sound better and have more air and soundstage etc. plus the the cross over components can deteriorate over time.

What kind of amps do you have?

What amp, preamp, DAC, etc. do you have?  It all makes a difference.  Same for the room.

I have a restored Onkyo A7 amp with an onkyo CD player hooked up with a ZDAK Parasound to the DCM Time Windows.  Listening room is carpeted 16x21.

I know the crossovers in the TW are old.  The cabinets are a PITA to open as it's all glued.  I would like to find something 10-15 years old and have GR-Research upgrade the crossover.

If you find something you like 10-15 years old and is a well designed quality speaker, you may not need to any mods to the crossover.

What you could do is keep an eye open for an older AV123 or GR model, they pop up used once in a while and are not a fortune.

Consider buying a new pair of GR speakers, a better DAC like a Schiitt Yggdrasil, Chord Qutest or something similar and you will get the air and transparency that you are looking for. Or even a new integrated amp or a Schiitt Freya Plus preamp and Vidar amp.
