Thanks for doing this. I have an old pair of M2's and was wondering how the later models compared when sitting in a room. BTW, happy with the M2's, but they're in rotation with a pair of SP Technology Timepieces and a pair of Quad 63's, depending on my tastes at the time.

@JFT, what are the dimensions of your room? Thx.
It's L shaped. The main area is 13 x 22. In the back on the left side is another 12 x 10.

Thanks. Helpful. How far from the speakers do you anticipate the sweet spot will be, given the AMT? My room is 13 across, but only 11 ft deep, so I opted for the M5s. I do find myself pining a bit for the X5s ;), but worry they'd be overkill in my room . . .

I just received them Monday, so I'm still playing around with the placement of everything. At the moment, they are 3.5ft from the wall and 6ft apart edge to edge. My sofa is 10ft away from the speakers, and they sound good at that distance in my room. With my setup I wouldn't want to sit closer. Most of my listening is spent while sitting at my desk in the back of the room, which is about 16ft away, and they sound good there as well.

Incredible room Targa !!!
Thanks Stlrman!
Attached is a close up pic of one of the speakers. The actual color is more orange that what shows up with the lighting. They are actually hard to photograph as they are so reflective. Clayton and his team did an awesome job with the finish on these beauties.

Thanks. Is it your sense that the AMT directs or throws the high-mid and treble further out than a normal tweeter, such that that allows one to break the usual equilateral triangle rule of thumb? Mine are 3.5 from the front wall, 2 from the sides, and about 7 feet apart. Sweet spot is 7 feet or less with the M5s in my room.

I've never had trouble getting other tweeters to perform at the distances I listen at. There are a lot of variables like toe in, height, the room, volume knob position :). This AMT sounds effortless to me. On axis it sounds the same at 3ft as it does at 13ft. I don't think you'd have any trouble near field depending on your preferences, however I wouldn't enjoy having the AMTs pointed directly at my ears at 3ft unless I was listening at low volumes. (They perform really well at low volumes btw)
My preference so far with these is to sink down into my sofa so my ears are at the same level as the mid range driver, I have them pointing a few inches to the outside my shoulders @ 10ft distance from the speakers. This may change as they break in and I experiment with placement more.
-
Thanks much for the helpful replies. My room is small, but I can get 7 feet away from the speakers. I look forward to hearing how yours break in!

Ron just dropped this speaker positioning video. May be worth trying just to see what the results are. I've never been one to calculate speaker position this precisely, but I may try this over the weekend.

-
Yes, I saw this. Am thinking of trying it, but my room is so small and there are some constraints (an entry door and bookshelves) that prevent me from perfect symmetry. It's an enormously helpful video for beginners not yet cognizant of how crucial placement is. I continue to play with the position of mine--to good effect.

Thanks! Yeah the plant on the left is a Fiddle-leaf Fig and the other is a rubber plant. I've had them for about 6 or 7 years now and they were both about a foot tall when purchased. Plenty of light in my space and I just water them a couple of times a week.
-
@bbybaudio That looks like a Primaluna integrated you're running with the XP5's. Which model Primaluna and what are your room dimensions? I'm trying to decide between the M3S and X5, and I would be driving them with a Primaluna Dialog HP (70w/ch) in a 15x19 room, with seating about 9-10 feet from the speakers.
-
rharden, primaluna dialogue HP premium integrated produced after the cap changeover in late 2017 I believe. I am running Brimars in 4 of 6 tubes in front and Tungsol EL34bs or KT 150s as power tubes. Listening room is 22.5 X 15.5 X 9. Speakers are on the long wall, 3.5 ft from rear wall and 10.5 ft to listening position. Love the X5s. Have not heard M3s but folks seem to love them.
-
rharden, should mention that I also have diffusers behind listening position that greatly improve sound.
-
With GR Research subs. Object in back right corner is an audio optimizer, not a cat tree :duh: Sub partially shown behind left X5 is for home theater - placed carefully where cat can stand on it and look at yard, finding objects to kill and bring in.

radarnyc, I purchased from Greg Rael (g.rael@comcast.net). I temporarily mounted panels behind speakers and sent pic to Clayton. He suggested that they be close to the height of the flat panel TV. Greg Rael saw the pic and said height is correct. Used large "Command Velcro strips" to adhere to panels and wall.

Photo of my M5 Sapphires not long after delivery shows just the primary listening area of my odd and volumetrically large room.
Dimensions are 14ft width x 25ft length x 16ft AVG height. (A 45degree ceiling is 12.5ft on right side rising to 19.5ft on the left side).
The studio-style space opens to a dining room and kitchen on the first level, and to the master bedroom - with an even higher ceiling - on the upper level.
All in, it's approximately 8,500 cubic feet.
GIK Acoustics room treatments to quell 2.0 second reverb peak at 74Hz is on order. Oriental rugs placed just in front of the speakers are not shown.
Mandatory Labrador accessory not yet acquired ;-)

LOL, I feel bad too that I can’t really enjoy the X2.. I’m in Florida and the AC air handler is about 10’ behind me along with the thermostat location - the fridge is at the front right. The Rogers class A amp gets pretty warm which makes the AC run so to much noise for me - feedback loop along with the wife doing her thing. It’s the previous formal dining room and in the middle of an open plan. My other system is in a much smaller but isolated and treated room. I think I’m going to have to start listing the system for sale unfortunately :( If anyone is interested in the gear please PM me for details.
-

Clayton received mine on 9/8/2020. Still trying to learn them they are 34" from the front wall and sound balanced with good boytom end now. They are breaking in and the sound is night and day better. Got to give these speakers time to break-in and take the time to play with the setup, these are not boxed speakers so you cannot treat them the same.

Hi Lyndryguru,
Nice system. I have the X5's which are phenomenal and was looking at getting back into vinyl but not wanting to spend too much money as I'm uncertain if I will go all in. How do you like the Marantz? It seems like a good value for the money and comes with a very good cartridge so I had that on my radar.
Thanks

I had the Marantz for a while. Decent deck but I couldn’t tame the inner groove distortion. Went to the vpi prime and I absolutely love it. Quite a bit more than the Marantz but for me it was worth it.
-
For the money the Marantz is a great table, as you noted the cartridge is quite considerable. It is not without issues or limitations, as I have owned it for two years. Would I buy it again, yes. However, I will once the world returns to normal look to purchase a VPI as the table.

Thanks! They sound incredible. Very clear and well balanced. They (X2's) sound much different than the TM's, as they should. I will say this, I have tremendous respect for the TM's. They were a more forgiving sounding speaker, that I could have lived with the rest of my audio journey. I really loved them.
You mean how do they compare to the Triodemasters? I have not heard the X3 or X5. A note as to why I didn't get the X3/5. I wanted an all passive speaker, as I did not want anymore powercords in my system :nono: Plus the X2's to me are the coolest looking speaker on the planet.

Thanks Tom. I've looked at those and read a couple reviews. I'm pretty happy with the Duelund 'Dual' DCA12GA and 16GA for jumpers for now. I figure since the X2 are wired internally with Duelund that I would keep the rest of the speakers wire the same.
thx

Yes, it's a old xiaomi model. No shadows and works great. The speakers stand a bit in front of the lower half of the screen but it's not that bad as there is usually not much content in the lower corners. Used to live in a larger room, there had no problem at all.

I tried as well and rotated them, saved them, and they still flopped over. Alot of time that has to do with the software you might have used to take the photo or save it and it can be tricky to undo.

M3 Sapphires
Finally, I ordered the M3 in Cherry. I'm extremely excited! Because of my living situation, single bachelor who still rents, I'm going to setup the system in my bedroom, powered by the new NAD M33. Also, I am leaning towards making some Transparent power cabling upgrades.
Your room looks high fidelity! I'll be expecting great performance, although it'll be awhile before I have my M3's 4' or more into my room.

Has anyone got a clear photo of the "MAPLE" finish offered by Spatial Audio?
We are interested in a lighter finish - without actually going to WHITE.
-
I've got the natural finish and I get compliments on it constantly. It looks much better in person than on a
screen.
-
i went through the same consideration
maple is the lightest wood finish but definitely a yellow coloration
sapele is what i ordered, a little darker but more neutral on the color spectrum, kind of a greyish innocuous wood grain if you will

We just LOVE the NUTMEG finish - but its not an option on the M5... :bawl:

Yes! Given how I've seen Cherry darken over the years, I'm expecting my pair to age gracefully and beautifully. That finish is only 2-3 weeks old, and that speaker was unboxed 12/7/20.

Hi zkeller
Wanted to chime in here as I switched from Vandersteen 2ces to the M3 Sapphires. Initially I felt like it was a mistake switching from a really good and deep sounding box speaker and still love their sound but I wanted to see what the fuss was about. A very different listening experience and very much room and system dependent. I did quite a bit of acoustic treatment for the Spatials and they are very very revealing but and it’s a big but you will not get the big booming bass of a box speaker. It’s kind of like your kids. You love them, but you love them different. :D Great Forum here and people are always willing to help. Even met some people to come listen and go check out their systems.
-

Z,
I only got the stereo pair hooked up last night. Immediately, I'm encouraged. My definition of revealing is about a low noise floor, clear gradation and delineation of recording character and quality, and a sound performance that is interesting to listen to, etc. Not "revealing" as I often understand its use, which I normally read as "brutal when/because something isn't right."
Anyhow, yes, I've owned and worked with many box speakers. My aim with this purchase was high value and high fidelity. Also, I'm a tweaker, but nod a modifier. I like a full-breadth, balanced sound and will aim for that first, and reaching for "absolute sound" occurs when successfully removing artifice around that balanced presentation.
Out of the box, there's nothing wrong with the M3 Sapphires, lots right, and their promise is evident. I didn't hear them before I took the plunge. It's the most I've ever spent on one piece of gear, and I'm glad I did. When I worked for Linn, Inc. here in the US, source is considered most important and speakers are the last/least piece of the playback chain. I didn't buy these to make better what I was hearing, but do expect their characteristics will serve as a clear window into the tale of my upstream choices.
About their bass performance, I'm not there yet; I'm only getting started, and my speaker bases are within 6" of the rear wall. I'll make 'em sound good given my circumstances, but they're not in an ideal setting. I anticipate they'll be akin to the experience I had when I owned a used pair of Magnepan Tympani 1D's, and a friend was listening to live Grateful Dead played via DAT and a McIntosh MC 2120 amp that I also used to own. He commented about the bass, and I pointed out, and asked him to notice, that the bass sounded like Phil Lesh, no more and no less... that was the quality (at least one) by which I judged my system.
Anyhoo. I'm happy and encouraged.

Z,
Out of the box, there's nothing wrong with the M3 Sapphires, lots right, and their promise is evident. I didn't hear them before I took the plunge. It's the most I've ever spent on one piece of gear, and I'm glad I did.

Good for you!
Sometimes you just have to treat yourself :thumb:

Could I ask how far you have the baffles from the front wall?
-
zkeller,
I have mine approximately 4 feet from the front wall toe-in. If you look at my gallery I think you’ll get a sense of the room with acoustic treatments. Also to clarify from an earlier post. By revealing I mean hearing everything that the music offers in a very good way. These are just very articulate speakers smooth and so enjoyable, I’m listening more than ever. I am blessed to have them and the hearing :icon_lol: to appreciate them. They do have amazing bass as well but in a different way than a box would deliver. Ultimately IMO you will not be disappointed with proper setup, room and associated gear.

Love the cherry finish! This will match my audio rack nicely as it’s made out of cherry.

Thanks Grahamps,
I just turned 60 and feel like a kid again. I got my first stereo when I was 15, a Sansui AU-717 amp and Technics SB-7000a’s and was hooked for a lifetime of listening. Now I’m thinking which amp would pair nicely with the M3’s without blowing my retirement :nono: Currently using the little known SPL Director/Performer combo which is very nice but wonder how much more these speakers will improve with tubes.

Agree! Mine too

Where have you been?
Not sure who posted that old pic...but it wasn't me. :dunno:
Been focused on other things, but might be considering getting into one of Clayton's new models.

Well, my M5s arrived yesterday - an outstanding Christmas Present. They were packed very well and we had no problems un-boxing and setting them up. I have just placed them based on the instructions and will be playing with placement over the next several days. These are the Cherry veneer with the color touched to fairly closely match my cabinet -- I'm very pleased with the result.

I'm excited to share how things are going with my new Cherry M3 Sapphires, but this quick iPhone video of my system is all I can muster today. It's something, and I do hear some of the character of my stereo in the video, but it's not the best portrayal. I'll pull out my Zoom H5 one day when I post more.

Your Cherry M5 Sapphires look fantastic! Congrats!

Added 2 RPG BAD Arc diffusers which can be placed in front of the TV, and it is a very nice improvement.

Curious if it is just on my end, but did all the images disappear for everyone else, or just me? :) I was hoping to see some of the X series 3 woodlike finishes. Thinking of ordering a pair of X5s. It's Claytons fault.. and Ron's. With exception of tube amps and preamps I seem to buy everything Ron mentions!

Thanks! Doesn't make photo viewing easier, but is good to know I'm not in a boat by my lonesome :) Appreciate the feedback!

PLEASE tell me you are paid commission off what I buy :) Ron speaks, John buys. For those old enough to recall EF Hutton anyways. Course, aside from my DAC I do seem rather good at avoiding tube gear for whatever that is worth.

Commission, I wished! Would have a pair of M3 Sapphire's sitting in my listening space

Well, if anyone has ever deserved commission..... it would be you :) I should just ask for an advance notice on the next item I am sure to want. Might speed up the process a bit!
Clayton... please start Ron's commission account for his M3 sapphires.
Ron, I'll send Slawa an email for the same for your Level 4 DAC. I'm trying to decide on a color for the X5s. Hmm maybe design a motorized trolley system for them to be stored against the front wall when not in use...... that was said without an ounce of seriousness! But, Ron's commission account is deserved!

We were neighbors. In the mid-1980s I started my career at 40 Wall Street with the old Manufacturers Hanover Trust Bank.

Thanks Clayton.Getting them dialed in, once I stop listening to them!

Your speakers look great! I'm loving my Cherry M3 Sapphires. I moved my pair a lot, for I'm not sure how long. I don't think I've moved them inadvertently, or on purpose, in a month. I've been super satisfied with the sound and the speakers ability to politely and accurately keep me informed of the many changes made upstream from them.
Herbiesaudiolab.com floor protecting sliding discs enabled extremely small adjustments to be made on my wood floors.

Hi GrsZ06,
I'm currently saving up for some M3 Sapphires and will be running them through a Rogue Stereo 100 amp. Please let us know what you think as the speakers break in.

Made a few changes since last posting. I decided less is more for the room treatments in my case, so I pulled out most of the GIK's, and mounted the RPG BAD Arc panels on the wall behind the X5's. I resurrected my vinyl collection with a new Acoustic Signature Typhoon Neo/Aquilar tone arm, and DS Audio optical cartridge. I always wanted a Silent Running Audio Scuttle rack, so there it sits, and it is quite awesome indeed. It completely eliminated any need for various footers that were previously in use.

Thank you. The room is quite small, ~ 10x16 ft, speakers on the long side. Wide angle lens makes it look bigger. Speakers are about 3 ft out from the front wall.

Very nice!! with the size of your room, I try to toe in about 1/2" more from the outside of each speaker. Try to minimize the sidewall reflections. Won't hurt to try. 3' is a nice distance from the front wall, Clayton told me once you have it, try going back 6" closer and see the effect in the bass, he said rooms sometimes have bass nulls and going back 6" or forward more 6" will tell you how good they are working from you/I had them, good education and piece of mind..LOL!

Thanks for the suggestions. I played with the positioning and I liked the current setup most in terms of soundstage depth. Having the setup like this I ran RoomPerfect software on my Lyngdorf and that further improved things (it solidifies imaging, improves bass).
Seems like there's good synergy between Sapphires and my Lyngdorf amp.

synergy is like cooking, it is what makes your love the taste of the food when you hit it to enjoy it and savor it. Smile! I have used 3 amps on my Shappries M3s and all have sounded great, but what makes a bigger difference is the right power cord on the amp. M3's speak to any changes you make.
-
Are you referring to power cord on the speakers internal amps or power cords on outboard amps that power mids and tweeter?
-
Are you referring to power cord on the speakers internal amps or power cords on outboard amps that power mids and tweeter?
M4s do not have an internal amp, they're entirely passive.
I do have an Audioquest power cord on my amp.
-

The power cord on your amplifier drives the passive speakers. BUT even on a power speaker a better power cord can really improve the sound. My old Quad 63's came to life with a better and higher gauge power cord. Be the same for the woofers on the active X series speakers.
-
My X3s are due to deliver tomorrow 5/5/2022! Clayton said most folks do not hear a difference in power cords on the plate amp, but some do. Guess it depends on your ears and what power cord you substitute? :icon_lol:
