Hey all, I'm just getting Fex started on his HT build thread, this post is the last you'll hear from me, as far as posting for him, the rest is all him.
Looks like he's off to a good start! :thumb:
=============================
Building-HT/2 Channel
I sold my grouper boat , and no longer need a place to store it.Therefore , the logical next step, would be , to build a room for HT/Audio .I will post pic's of the process.
After reading about room ratio's for way to long, the dimensions are 20x26x10 .
The construction spec's are a compromise based on budgetary constraints. Thanks to all of you for the advise i get from reading this forum.
Mike was probably the primary reason for this, as the first real system i ever heard was at his place.I was stunned with the sound.
Hopefully, the iron will pass inspection the am, and tomorrow the concrete will flow.
I am trying to find vermiculite in florida ,to insulate and soundproof the block and am finding that anything out of the norm is a problem to find!
The block is complete. Hoping the insulation company can foam today !
-
The block was pumped with concrete every 4 foot and the top block was pumped full also.Rerod is run every 4 foot and along side windows and doors , from the footing to the top.At the top the entire layer is wired with #5 rerod and is tied to the rods running to the footing rods. This is a Hurricane andrew code for florida buildings. You can see hurricane straps that are buried in concrete on top that are nailed to the trusses.
Monday should be truss day.Tuesday , an insulation company is drilling a 7/8 inch hole in each core of the block.(2 per block)Foam is pumped in to fill every nook and cranny. Its an r of 6 , but , also increases the STC rating on the walls. Will keep updating.

-
Thanks to Andrew, that's also the code nationwide. Not sure about the width being exactly twice the height. You should consider reducing to 18 feet via a wall of built-ins.
-
the interior wall is 18 '4''.the radio's are not within the Loudin formula.
so there 2.34x1.84x1.
hope its sounds good.
thanks for feedback.love this site !

If you bring a wall back, it'll make room for an infinite baffle sub. :icon_twisted:

Or better yet, more than one. :thumb:
Two in the recessed wall, one in the ceiling, and one in the 4th corner of the room via an angled corner. :icon_twisted: :icon_twisted:
-
Now you're talkin' :thumb:
I'll bet we could spend a BUNCH of his money.
-
This was a High Wire act!

-
The trusses are up and the 2 layers of high r are in place. They shoot 1x2 into the block to screw sheetrock in.
Tomorrow, the insulation will be pumped in.Hope to get a photo of the process. You can hear the room getting quite.

It will get "louder" again when you hang sheetrock.

Why block versus conventional construction?

Thanks Phil !
Actually, i could have done wood, but, allot more costly, not too hurricane resistant, and the biggy- termites!

Francis - be thankful we don't have these yet - http://www.wpbf.com/article/caribbean-termites-invade-south-florida/1315288
From what I understand (could be wrong), they can actually travel up and eat the material under the roof.
or these (as well yet) - http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/giant-invasive-snails-are-eating-stucco-off-florida-homes/CoZmPvnmrhBHzZSYjjignO/
Of course when you finish the room, I might have to check it out and eat all your popcorn  so you can post a story about those pesky Florida things eating something :green:
I'm in process (over the next couple of months) of getting a new receiver in the main system for the overhead channels I had put in about a year and a half back and I'll be doing 11.1. The audio systems are improved since you have heard them (mostly new interconnects I've made and tweaking of settings on the music server and sound treatments). I'm probably going to do one other thing as well soon.
-
Phil- we will have to visit !
Todays progress was interesting.THe foam is injected under 120 lbs of pressure.Check out the second photo, leaking from places that didn't look bad.

-
Wow, I've never seen that process before. Neat!
-
Wouldn't covering the entire exterior have been more effective? I would have used an EFIS product (rigid insulation covered by expanded metal (fencing) and stucco).
What exterior treatment do you have in mind?
-
drive it or stow was 6.00 per foot.nice product, but , out of my budget.$5500.
And yes , doing the outside would have sealed the whole thing up.
-
ps they coat the block with a CEMENTUS FINISH.
a thin coat to level the walls , then a slip finish like stucco.
its used all over florida.
-
Been in ny for 11 days. Here is the roof "dried in"
Electrician begins tomorrow.I am wiring for DTS-X.
A bit nervous , but , will share the results !
-
Nervous? Na, it's going to be badass so long as you don't start putting up oak stuff with a light stain
-
sheetrock !
-
This will be a sweet bomb shelter/HT room.
-
They sprayed 8 inches of open cell foam.Every crack / electrical box / hole was filled. They left before i got home from work.I have to buy these guys lunch.OUTSTANDING attention to detail.this is now like a thermos jug.Should be quite i there!

Wow, movin' right along! :thumb:

Looking really nice!
-
Thanks Phil
-
looking fantastic!!! :thumb: :thumb:
A couple of questions: What is the cost of your build? If that is private , I understand.
What going into the theater ? projector , screen , speakers , etc.?
-
^+1!
-
Great looking room. I can't wait to hear it.
-
the contractor was 28,500.i had to paint(sherman williams 1025.),do electric(1600)lots of dedicated circuits.;a/c(2322).the foam of insulation was 800 more for the roof, and 539 for the walls.i had a slab that needed to be increased 2 feet length wise, and a footer dug down on one side.that was in the contractors price. That included 2 layers of high r sheathing to offset the joints.
the wires were expensive , even though Bart hooked me up for some cables.
will keep you updated.Currently redoing some gik room treatments.adding membranes to the bass traps, coping Bart and trimming them out to look nice, setting up audio.
video is next month.
-
Starting to move in.Allen from SLR is setting up the room for me.A giant in the recording industry , he has spent 3 days setting up the room, fixing room treatments, and teaching me about music. I am grateful Ryan Scott introduced me.
The room came alive as the treatments began to get put in the place. The transformation from a reverb chamber to a sound room were amazing. The sound is at a level , i never dreamed possible.
Will continue to post, fine tune the speaker/room interaction, install the ht.

Phil - this is Allen Rumbaugh.
He has built more recording studio's then you can imagine.Has recorded a ton of stars and has forgotten more then most experts claim to know.
I watched the room get transformed as he installed traps, diffusors, in a logical methodology that he has developed over years of designing studio's.
I tried one of his diffusor's , based on Ryan's Scott's recommendation ,2 years ago.It was a game changer.
He pioneered it through the school of hard work.He and his partner have implemented many unique concepts to fix all kinds of audio issues.Give me another month and then come over for lunch .Allen has two more finishing touches he is building and sending down.
My summary of 3 days of his expertise-"the room is a sweet spot "

"the room is a sweet spot "
Big words indeed! :thumb:

an intial RTA for the 2 channel set up.
The soundstage opened up as we brought the speakers forward.
The audio is beyond expectations.I will going through Jim Smith's methodology next,
to fine tune the the music.
Costco dropped the vizio p75 $8oo, so that got ordered wednesday morning.Ht set up will begin this weekend.
Landscaping today.
-
Some custom bass traps.SRL modified and trimmed in 3/4" maple to match the audio rack. The room is coming together.I received a p75 from Vizio , and it did not work.A call to Vizio , and a new one will be here in 8-10 days.Great service.
