10 favorite tunes of all time . .
« on: 2 Apr 2011, 02:29 am »
I ripped this topic from Hifi Wigwam in the UK.  I just know YOU lads and lasses are gonna have a more interesting take on this than what I read over there.  It is/was a popular topic, however, so I thought I'd see if you thought so, too.

This is what I posted FYI.  Blues is, or was, popular in the UK but those guys on the WigWam must be from a different generation.  Anyway, here goes . .

"Tramp- Lowell Fulsom
I Wanna Ta-Ta You, Baby- Johnnie Guitar Watson
Smokestack Lightin- Howlin Wolf
Pledging My Love- Johnny Ace
Don't Explain- Billie Holiday
well. there's five . ."

6. Voodoo Child- Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carnegie Hall version
7. Beyond the Realms of Death- Judas Priest, Metal Meltdown
8. All Along the Watchtower- Dave Matthews Band, Live in Chicago
9. Black Sabbath- Black Sabbath
10. Inside Looking Out- Grand Funk, Caught in the Act

This is one of those lists that would change every time I made it:

1) Slow Death  - Flamin' Groovies
2) I Had a Dream - Long Ryders

4) Run Chicken Run - Link Wray
5) Slow Show - The National
6) Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground
7) Psycho - The Sonics
8- Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
9) EMI - Sex Pistols
10) Rats - Syd Barrett

Sure, whatever.  There wasn't rock and roll when and where I grew up.  Chuck Berry changed that.  Most southern white kids couldn't relate to pure R&B but then came early Elvis and put a white face on it.  Those that I listed are from that period in my youth and still are bad to the bone today.

There was a topic on Favorite song from a bit back and I looked to see what I had then:

this is tough, but i'd (probably) have to say:

"Roadrunner" - The Modern Lovers

but there are too many just behind (and they keep changing)

"I Put A Spell On You" - Nina Simone
"Gaudete" - Steeleye Span
"Israelites" - Desmond Dekker
"John Barleycorn" - Traffic
the aria from La Wally (I fell in love with this in the early 80's from the movie Diva)
...and many more

That's 6, Today I'd drop Guadette and John Barleycorn and have:

"Roadrunner" - The Modern Lovers
"Ebben? Ne andrò lontana" from La Wally - many good performances
"At Home He's A Tourist" - Gang of Four
"I Put A Spell On You" - Nina Simone
"Mandinka" - Sinéad O'Connor
"Piss Factory" - Patti Smith
"I am the Fly" - Wire
"Tell Mama" - Savoy Brown
"(Pa) Ubu Dance Party" - Pere Ubu
"Israelites" - Desmond Dekker

Tomorrow - who knows?

Five more to make my ten . .

"Sweet Little Angel- BB King
Heard It Thru The Grapevine- Gladys Knight and The Pips
Chain of Fools- Aretha (tho the performers in 'The Commitments' do the hell out of it!)."

Ok, I could manage only three before my mood changed and I got on to other things.  There's some hip tunes up there, yo.  Nice work.
