Just a heads up guys...I have a new set of Auroras going in for paint tomorrow. These guys will be all black. It'll be an automotive black with a touch of metal flake. This set will have a new stand without a plinth. The x-o will be in the 3-sided stand column, viewable from the back. The speaker posts will be at the rear of the stand. This seems like an elegantly simple solution to me. I'll get pics of this posted as soon as the painter is done. This is a new painter, and he's a pro at hot rods and classic car restoration. His shop had a super rare (and pricey) '69 Camaro getting a fresh coat of paint when I was there last. If his showcar pics are any indication, these Aurora should look like a million bucks!!!
-
Can't wait to see these. Are there anymore in your shop? Did you guys figure out what 8" driver is going to be used?
-
This particular set will have the last set of Vifa woofers that I have. The performance of this woof is really great. It's also the first time we'll try the Transducer Labs magnesium oxide dome. It has slightly less sensitivity than the beryllium dome, but a smoother overall response. An interesting cabinet for sure!
-
Great news Ed. When will they be back from the painter?
Can't wait to see them.
-
great news LONG LIVE VAPOR !
-
cant wait to see them...i wish i had money to buy those...i bought something else to replace the big Nimbus Black...
-
Hello Ed
Any idea on what the price will be on these automotive black paint special Auroras once they are ready to be sold? Thank you Jim
-
Hey Jim! Thanks for your interest in the Aurora. I've made a few changes to this model;it'll be fitted with a different dome tweeter, it'll sit on a new designed corian stand with the x-o visable from the back of the column. The price for this new cab will be $4,899. The new stands with cabs should be gorgeous; I can't wait for them to get finished! This set was actually for my wife, but I can always make another for her, right?
-
Hi Ed, are you still making the aurora without the coriander and crossover in the base?
-
Hey Monte, I put coriander in my chili, but I've NEVER put spices of any kind in my speakers. That's a bit too esoteric even for me!!! I could try adding cloves to the inversion layer for some aroma therapy. But seriously, the x-os will be in the columns of the stands from now on. No plinths. I'll get pucs of the new design after the painter is done with the first prototype!
-
Sorry bout that Ed. Guess I better use spell check
-
Lol. I just couldn't help myself.
-

Unfortunately most spell check software won't check context (particularly forum or browser spell check), and coriander is spelled correctly. Besides, even if context was checked, what software would be bold enough to challenge that? ;)
But when I first read it, my mind automatically substituted Corian without any realization of error. The human mind is an amazing thing. Computers and AI still have a long way to go.

The Aurora is going to a corian baffle like my new prototype. The stands for both models will be made of corian, and their x-os will be in the stands column. The cost will go up, but the corian will be such an improvement!
-
How about using thyme, that way the drivers will be thyme aligned?
Sorry, just had to get in on the fun!
-
Sorry, SRB, maybe your mind is an amazing thing. When my mind read "coriander", I SAW coriander, because I've been feinding for some of my chili for weeks now!!! (If you saw my prodigious girth, you'd understand) My mind is easily distracted with food references. :o
In fact, I wonder if it would be ok to have a roaster full of my chili at some speaker shows. Smoked meat chili is something everyone needs to try once before they die!!!

Sounds like you should give up speaker building and go into commercialization of your chili!
Better margin and much bigger customer base. Seems like a no brainer to me. ;)

How true! I have a great BBQ place down the street and always pick up a couple of pounds of smoked brisket for the basis of my chilli.
Hey Ed, try picking up a smoked spicy sausage, browning it with some fresh jalapeño and add in some chopped garlic for the last minute of sautéing. Toss that in your chilli pot and deglaze the sauté pan with a little red wine. Thank me later.

WOW!!! THAT SOUNDS AMAZING!!! Lets do an Audio Circle Chili Cookoff!!! I bet we'd have some great tunes, too!!! :thumb:

And the finished product! I finished it with Fritos and cheddar cheese, but honestly I think it's better with no garnishments.
OK Ed, show me what you've got!

looks great

Ok, here it is. Maybe not as pretty a presentation, but...here I'm getting ready to put the chili together.

Here's the finished product getting ready for transport. Good stuff!!!

Please don't take this as bragging, but this chili has won 1st place for 3 years straight at the prestigious Blossom and Heath annual chili competition!!!

Holy Chili Peppers! You guys are makin' me check Orbitz to book a trip to St. Louis!!
But back to our regularly scheduled speaker thread, can't wait to see those Auroras, Ed.
-
I think I'll stick to my turkey pumpkin chili, that looks too strong for me!
-
WAHOO!!! Looks fantastic Ed!
-
Looks great. However, if you keep posting stuff like that people are going to want it with every pair of speakers purchased
-
For competition chili (5 gallons minimum) I use 12 lbs of beef roast and 4 lbs of pork shoulder. I then smoke that meat for around 2.5 hours with 1 part hickory and 2 parts apple wood. I don't want to fully smoke the meat but imbue it with a hearty smoke flavor. After the rest of the TOP SECRET ingredients are added, it then simmers for at least 3 hours before a competition. I call this recipe "Gunsmoke and Honey" chili. It's taken around 8 years of experimentation to get just right. Wow...I guess this Aurora thread went off on quite a tangent!!! :o :P
-
Maybe I should make 5 gallons of "Gunsmoke and Honey" chili whenever speakers that I build are shown?!!! People might stay for a longer listen if they like the eats, right?

Initially I was thinking 16 pounds of meat sounded like a lot but I used about 3 pounds for a gallon, so pretty close on the ratio. I like the addition of smoked pork and in fact tried that once when my BBQ guy made a mistake and gave me pork instead of brisket (I did however go back and get brisket too). I am pretty sure more smoked meat never hurts!
One final comment on this tangent: I took a lot of cooking lessons from Jeff Blank (owner/chef at Hudson's on the Bend in Austin) and he had a really great saying. "When in doubt...add another jalapeno..."
-
Hey Todd2, try adding a few canned Chipotles in adobo sauce. You'll find them in the Latin foods section in most stores. They have a great smokey flavor, and any more than a few will pick up the heat of your chili substantially. I'd sent my sis the dry ingredients already mixed (I wouldn't give even my sister the recipe!!!) with instructions about how much meat, beans and diced tomatoes. My recipe called for 3 - 4 Chipotles in a batch of chili. She miss-read my instructions and added 3 - 4 CANS of Chipotles in adobo sauce. The resulting abomination was inedible. Sisters!!!! JEESH!!! :duh:

Back to the original subject...SPEAKERS!!! Maybe someone would like to see the new "stand" that the Aurora will sit on? This Aurora won't have the x-o in a plinth, like I've mentioned. It'll be inside the column. Since the plinth added around 5", I had to modify and stretch the shape of the column to put the tweeter back to the right height for this set. Here's the new shape. It's 6.5" wide, and 20" deep. I'll have 1.5" thick corian outriggers stretched out front and back to stabilize the whole thing. I like the idea of seeing the x-o by just peering around the back! A nicely sheathed cable will run from the x-o to the back of the stand to the speaker posts. I think that this is a simple yet elegant solution!

Sorry Ed,
I know you put a lot of work into this but I hate the new column. It takes away everything that was sexy about the original Aurora. It looks too massive to me and the back looks like a giant "C". Everything I liked about the original design (baby Nimbus on a small pedestal) is gone. I was super close to buying this speaker before Ryan had his personal problems so I'm very interested in how the new design progresses. I don't like the changes I'm seeing. I personally would like to see a column that starts in the back and tapers to the front on the front on the floor. That would be sexy.
I liked this quite a bit:

Those are a beautiful set, I'll grant you that. Wait until you see the new set painted with the outriggers on the column. I think it'll look killer!
-
You are a talented designer, no doubt about that, so I will wait for final pictures and give honest feedback on the finished design.

If anyones interested, maybe I could bring these to Axpona. At least to display. I'll be there helping Lampizator with my rack. Spatial speakers will be in the room. Maybe if anyone out there wants an afterparty listen somewhere?
-
Ok, this is it. The shape has been changed a bit. I hope this does it for everybody. I took your criticisms to heart, Slush, and softened the point and shortened the length of the top. I also moved the radius lower on the bottom front and increased the radius. I think that this looks better balanced aesthetically, and remember, this column needs to be deeper than the original to contain the x-o.

-
Ed,
At first I didn't see much of a change, then I compared the two pictures side-by-side. The redesign looks significantly better! The slope is back and the "baby bump" on the bottom front is gone. Sorry I didn't catch the need for the change when I posted last night. I didn't know you were relocating the crossover. This looks really good. Can't wait to see the final pictures!

Ed, like Slush I find the original to be much, much better looking. Just my two cents. If I was to purchase another pr. could I get the original stands?
Thanks
-
I just gotta say guys...let me get this newest set painted and on this stand. As a whole I think this is stronger.
-
Here's the stands minus the front column cover. I think the stand balances the Auroras mass well.

Another view.
-
Is that the crossover towards the back and do you have the corian made up for the stands?
-
(http://www.audiocircle.com/image.php?id=160139)
Here's the x-o board. I'm not making this stand out of corian. Also, this stand sits on top of outriggers. .5" thick aluminum, 2" deep, 16" wide.
-

Here's a pic of the top of the stand on top of the column, under the cab. The only things missing now are the front column covers, outriggers and paint.

Could someone stand these pics up for me?

Hi Ed, I did it. May take a couple of browser refreshes to get the updated versions. For future reference you can do by going to your gallery, then using Manage albums, click on the image, then one of the rotate left or right buttons.
Nice work BTW :)

Thanks guys!!!
-
I've been to busy to post, but I have been stalking this build. 8) Looking good Ed! Can't wait to see them finished. Has there been any progress made on the prototype speakers?
P.S. Please bring me some of that chili next time you come to Florida to visit.
-
Nice work Ed!
I thought the cabs were in the paint shop?
-
Lol. Pete pointed out that the stands and the speakers should be at the paint shop at the same time! No kidding???!!!
