Lower power version of the D200
« on: 26 Dec 2005, 02:04 pm »
Maybe i am asking too much, but is there a consideration of a lower power and lower cost version of the D200, but still having the same circuit design as the D200 ?

I would think many people would only need maybe a 100 watts for monitor speakers with a powered subwoofer.

there are the d100's at 100 watts but i don't think they have the same circuit design, both are class d and the go for somewhere around $1500 a pair.

Yep, D-100 is the 100w version ($1599), the amplifier circuits are almost identical, the power supply voltage being the main difference, which also determines the power output capability.

Well, i knew the D100's were available, but i thought the 100's were a different animal than the 200's.

Seems like most opinions i've read are that the 200's sound better than the 100's , and that they are an upgrade in sound quality  .........     which seems odd if they are the same circuit design ......

So Dusty, iyo, do the D100s' sound the same as the D200's .....    ???

Early versions of D-100 were a different circuit/module...when D-200's came out, we also updated the D-100 to use the same circuit...they now sound the same.

You can tell by looking at the rear heatsink plate, total of 8 screws indicates new version, 6 screws is earlier model.

i was wondering if you could elaborate more on the differences between the D100/D200

Are they both based on the ucd400?

any plans for a D300 based on the ucd700?

Both D100/200 use modified version of the UcD400. The 200 uses seperate power supplies for the low voltage input stage and high voltage output stage...the 100 uses a simpler scheme.

We are working on a higher power model, but can't give any details at this time (we're still prototyping and comparing several circuits).

Hi

I'm curious about the relative performance between the D100 and D200. The specs seem to suggest the D200 gives a +3dB over the D100. Is there something more to the D200 than SPL?

I have the Decware RL3 which is around 93dB/w/m at 4ohm. The D100 should be perfectly fine getting them above 110dB. Does the D200, by having the extra 100W provide better control over the bass at lower volumes for example?

Thanks

george

The 100 & 200 sound almost identical because they use the same amplifier circuit. D-200 is has more power and is slighty better in all areas because of the seperate power supplies for input and output stages.

Hi Dusty, I seem to recall in one of the reviews I hread on the D100, there was a negative discussion on the midrange. I honestly don't remember the remark, which is why I'm not guessing at it. Anyway, my question, with the slight udates/newer modules, is the mids more open now? Maybe, what I should ask, any changes in sound?

I don't know of any review making negative comments regarding the midrange (Stereophile has done the only D-100 review).

The newer version has better bass and dynamics, and dispenses sound with a great sense of ease. It is also much better at driving difficult loads,  producing 300w into 2 ohms.

I have to admit, I don't remember the phrasing. It may not have been that review I read, but there was a comparison done with yours and another amp. The mids were just a tad laid back, compared with this other amp. That's why I had asked if the mids detailing like the tube type liquidity was there with the updated version. It was not that it was lifeless, but somehow, it wasn't as good as it could have been? Maybe a more fairer question is has this amp been compared to more traditional  analog amps?

Look through the various audio forums, you 'll find many owners listing what they've compared them to.

Dusty -

Was the D-100 amp that Stereophile had for review the earlier version or the later one that is similar to the D-200 circuit?

Hi Dusty,  Ok, I probably will expect a biased answer here, but (and maybe others can chime in here) what other analog amps would you put these against and have them hold there own. Now, I am assumeing an amp of about the same price points or higher. I hear that people either hate these types of amps in the way they sound or they seem to think they are the cat's meow. I am speaking here in rather general terms.

I want to try and put this somewhat delicately, but say  if I were to get one of the amps and supplies to build say the UCD400, what differences would I hear versus yours? I'd probably go with the one with the AD8620, which I've read is more open than the 2134 chip imput.  I am going to presume yours is better. Yours better be better for a more than twice the price.

I'll chime in, Mr Bronk.

Put yourself in Dusty's position and imagine trying to answer the questions you just posed.

I'm biting my tongue.
