Equipment-builders in the Toronto area
« on: 13 Dec 2006, 04:49 pm »
In the spirit (no pun intended!) of "support your local community", would there be interest in creating a list of TA and Ontario shops that build amps, speakers, cables, etc.? It could be posted on our Circle as a sticky.

It will take a little time to do this, but some of the information has been pulled together and posted elsewhere.

Thoughts?

Absolutely  :thumb:

I struggled to find insulation among other audio-related items when I built my room.  There was some info on AVS but it's more amateur in nature - not audiophile like.

At the very least I'd like to see stores (hi end), custom manufacturers, material suppliers (cable, insulation, etc) and DIY (Parts ConneXion).  Could be either retail or Web (as long as it's North of the border)

Guys, I'm working on some stuff right now as we speak. I will be putting together an official announcement in the next couple of days. There will be some ground pounding going on down here in Port Credit!

Cheers

(To keep this thread here as well), Congrats Dayglowy! :D Now, if a local enclosure-builder for chassis would step up, like these guys: http://www.diyenclosures.com, we'll have a combo truly special for our area.

Peter Daniel is a well-respected guy who does a lot for the DIY community, offering chipamp kits as well as completed amplifiers (garnering reviews in HiFi+, 6 moons, etc)...he does absolutely stunning design work (check out this beautiful pre-amp!!!), which can be seen on his website.
He is based in Mississauga (I think) and is a nice guy to boot.

We have also become an approved source for enclosures for RAW Acoustics of Surrey, B.C. We will be offering fully assembled turnkey speakers in custom finishes. We will have a pair of HT 8's completed shortly. You can peruse their product line here:

I had my cd player upgraded by them and they charged me $50 for a phantom repair, that if actually broken, would have been covered under my players warrenty. Needless to say I wasn't happy. I also know another person who sent their gear into them and was charged for a repair they didn't ask for.

Based on my experience Dan Santoni (in Hamilton) is honest to a fault, charges reasonable rates, works quickly, knows what he's doing, and he'll talk you out of any mods that he feels are snake oil or are simply not worth the money (that he would otherwise make!).

Yes I had Dan fix my amp and cd player. I fully recommend him. You won't get any suprise phantom repairs from him either. :p

I suggest we keep this thread on topic, but if that isn't the right way to go then maybe Spirit can create a sticky for the list. TAAS folk can then keep adding to the list of equipment-builders, and threads can begin separately on the particulars of any specific company listed on the sticky. Fair?  :)
