Dear P-man, Vinyl Lady, Doc, C-Bob, et al,

Any solo Sugarcane Harris to recommend? If memory serves his first record  "Sugarcane" was terrific but I haven't heard it in 30 (?) years. I'm very familiar with his work with Zappa, and as stunning as Harris is on "Burnt Weenie Sandwich", and man is he ever, it's his work with Mayall that I remember most.
I think I'll go to my grave with songs from "Back to the Roots" rattling around in my head. And what a great album that is! In addition to Mayall and Harris, there's Larry Taylor, Eric Clapton, Keef Hartley, Johnny Almond, Mick Taylor ... and Harvey Mandel!  Man, does Mandel hot on that record! And I love the story how Taylor came to Mayall's band by answering an ad in the newspaper. But out of all that great playing, it's Harris'
playing that I seem to focus on the most.

So, any Sugarcane Harris records to suggest? Possibly one of the Shuggie Otis productions?

Thanks in advance,
KP

Good morning Ken,
Sorry but I've never owned any of his solo albums.
Maybe others can enlighten us both.

Hi Ken, I have nothing to recommend other than what you mentioned about Sugarcane appearing on Zappa lp's, the one that stands out the most to me was his appearance on Hot Rats. Another would be on Mandel's album "The Snake". I imagine he must have played with Canned Heat at one time? I recently acquired his album "Sugarcane" shown below and haven't spun it yet. Wish I had more info to share.

Thanks everyone. (I really enjoy this thread.)

Yup, Cactus Bob, that's the one I remember. I'd be interested in your thoughts once you get a chance to spin it. If memory serves, the band members are uncredited but supposedly Robert Wyatt plays drums.
Hendrix was a fan and admirer and it was rumored that the "new music" and new band he was planning right before his death was to involve Harris. Billy Bang and Ponty were admirers as well. Interesting career to say the least. And yes, Mandel's The Snake is well worth having.

Here's an interesting clip of Harris with Mayall:
