Welcome to the Mid Atlantic Audio Circle. We are a group of audio enthusiasts/audiophiles from the area encompassing Delaware/Maryland/DC/Northern Virginia/Southern New Jersey/Southern Pennsylvania. Our primary goals are:
- to help each other with audio related problems by giving each other advice
- to share our love and our passion for all things audio.
- to freely exchange ideas related to audio
- to schedule social gatherings to listen to gear
- to make new friends and see old friends as well.
Everyone is welcome to post on this circle so please introduce yourself and let us know how you got started in audio.

Hiya Chris,
Congratulations on the MAA Circle and welcome to the Regional Circles portion of AC
I know from those of us that started the GAS Circle (Gateway Audio Society), its been a great way to keep in touch as a group. I think now we are well over 25 guys that get together on an irregular basis to listen and just hang out. Its been great fun.
Enjoy!
-
Congrats on the new MAAC circle guys and gals! Based on the number of votes to get this group made, I'm going to guess that you guys become the most active of all the regional circles.
Don't forget to have someone take and post pictures of your meetings...that's half the fun! :D
-
Very cool, congrats guys.
-
Congrats on your circle guys !!!!
Good to see another area group coming together....hope there's even more area groups to come. 8) [/list:u]And who knows, its not that far away...maybe some of "those" NY guys might pay a visit one day....Happy Listening !!!! [/list:u]

For those interested in ftf audio groups Philly already has a large one just teeming with high end folks and a few industry connections. Southern and northern New Jersey also have groups, along with the aforementioned NYC one(s).

What is ftf?

I should have used all caps, I guess. Face To Face. Non virtual. Although the Philly group also has a mailing list, it's different from a forum interface like this....

Hello. I'm new to Audiocircle and I'm not sure where to post this, but this seemed like a logical start so here we go....
I'm interested in Salk speakers/ Van Alstine amps. Since they are sold direct, I cant' listen to them anywhere except at shows.
I was wondering if any Salk/Van Alstine owners in the New Jersey area would be kind enough to open their doors to a very appreciative listener for an audition?
Best,
Luka

I am pleased to see the MAAC. Hopefully we can get a strong dialog going amongst the members. I am located in Lancaster County PA and would enjoy hearing from others as to their general location and what their systems are like.
-
Looks like we're back in business folks. Obviously no changes will be made, let's just keep going strong and show those GAS guys what for.
-
What the hell happened? Did we not have enough message traffic?

There was an "administrative" issue with the former facilitator. All is well now and we'll continue on as if nothing had happened.
-
Oh. Thanks for taking on the facilitator job. Hope to meet you at Capital Audio Show.

Assuming that there's a very small group of MAAC members from the DC metro area. Small enough that perhaps we could schedule a meet up to audition gear / hang out? Like the Jersey post back when, I've also wanted to hear Salk speakers, but don't want to run up the CC & incur charges on returns just to hear. Anyway - hoping we can drum up some more traffic.

Maybe I'm missing something, I've had a couple or Martini's, but didn't you just do a great job of sparking interest that lead to a meet at Phil's house tomorrow? I assume you're going there Saturday. I mean, you did good work reviving a dead thread, it's all appreciated I'm sure, but perhaps I've missed the intent of the post? Do you mean to set up another meet, or one in a different area of the Mid-Atlantic? Thanks in advance for any clarification, and thanks again for bringing some participation.

Hope the Martini's where shaken and not stirred :green: I think he was saying he wants to hear Salk Speakers. Salk was not at the last Capital Audiofest, but they were at the prior two. Dennis Murphy (who is local in MD) and has done design work for Salk shared a room with Salk in 2011 for his Philharmonic Speakers (they have a website) and had a room on his own this past July. He also uses Raal tweeters in some of his models. Extremely nice for the money (and the top of the line model was no slouch vs Salk). I'm sure he wouldn't mind being contacted.

Who would stir a Martini? At least not with one containing Vodka. I've heard that shaking bruises the Gin in a Gin Martini, but as I drink Gin Martinis on the rocks and very dry, stirring or shaking seems utterly useless. Vodka Martinis are always served up and shaken. Damn, I think I'll make another, bye.

I just put me on the map, and I'd like to join MAAC. My audio disease started 1968 when I got a KLH int amp and open reel deck and built a pair of speakers.

Welcome, it's good to see the survival rate has lasted over 40 years :green:

Phil, My initials are KLH, so I had a KLH integrated amp, RTR deck, and KLH 6 speakers for a while.

Never had KLH but have owned Henry Kloss designs

I have KLH 911B's sitting in a bedroom waiting for me to hook them up to the receiver sitting on the floor. (Best laid plans, etc.) I honestly can't remember where or why I bought them, I think to use as surrounds maybe? But they are some of the least offensive cheap speakers I've ever heard.

Just learned about Audiocircle from Klaus B. at Odyssey this past weekend. Would like to put myself on the map in the Annapolis area. Look forward to meeting the group someday.
-
Welcome oledude. We are pretty much all old dudes, so you should fit right in, I think there's a couple of meets scheduled for the fall and all are welcome.
-
One will be at my place in Sept (northern VA) and on the other side of the river in Nov at Rich Ws (and we may try to do something in August too)
-
Thanks for the warm welcome. I, too, was at the CAF this past weekend and probably walked past many of you. I know I met Phil in the Odyssey room. I am the one who lugged the Loreleis home from the show while Phil got the preamp.
-
Perhaps we met as well - I was the guy with the older kenwood turntable waiting on another AC guy (?). If not, that was the "other" Annapolis guy!
In anycase - welcome & hope to see you (again?) at one of the meet-ups.
Jon
P.s. St Johns College '94. The "other" Annapolis school - the cool one that is.

Then I saw you in the room. I was there at the end -- even helped boxing up the speakers. I think I might have said something like, "you are getting a great deal." Welcome to AC.
I want to do an informal get-together at my place in Vienna on the 17th or 24th of August and you are cordially invited.

Nice meeting you. I'm horrible with names (but at my age I'm lucky when I look in the mirror that I know my own ). Nice speakers. I have not hooked the preamp up yet. I opened it up and ordered some Synergy HiFi tubes which will get shipped out today. Klaus is a hoot too. Great guy. It's nice to meet someone who enjoys what he does, brings sensible value to customers and is not in it just for money.

berks county PA here !

Welcome vkohl. Nice speakers.

HellO MAAC.
Is someone from the I-81 corridore too far west for this group?
I'm trying to purchase in Martinsburg, WV., crrently staying in Frederick, MD. till we can get too closing. I noticed Capital Audiofest will be just down the road in a couple weeks and plan to attend on that Saturday. Anyway if you are willing to accept a roaming southerner from the west into your eastern group I would be interested.
I started my addiction with a no-name receiver with a TV tuner and cheap JCPenny's outlet speakers when I was a kid in high school. That addiction has grown to a full blown Vandersteen surround system with SMc Audio/McCormack gear being fed a healthy diet from VPI, Metrum and Denon sources.
Anyway let me know if there's room to slide in and share the addiction.
-
Welcome to the area!
Hope to see you and other MAAC folks at CAF!
-
Welcome C17FXR, yes, most certainly you can be a part of the group. All are welcome, step into the light, all are welcome...
CAF is a great show, small enough to be friendly, large enough to be representative. You may see a tired and haggard middle aged man sighing deeply at some new problem, that will be Gary Gill who works his butt off to make the show better every year.
-
Thanks, looking forward to the event. Is there a particular place and time you guys meet at or hangout?

Saturday Night dinner. You are welcome to join. We also go eat lunch and dinner throughout the C.A.F. event.

Quick intro post, as I've just gone from lurker to participant. :)
My name is Nicholas, and I live in DC and grew up just outside of Richmond.
I've owned gear from the big guys like Kenwood, B&W, Rotel, Pro-ject, to companies like Rega, SVS and most recently from small, American manufacturers like Rogue and Ryan Speakers.
To explain the "Industry Participant" label, I currently work for Linear Tube Audio. Previously, I worked for Furnace Record Pressing, and I'm a former music photographer and lifelong music fan (raised on everything from showtunes to John Prine).
So, as you can see, music has been a key part of my life and career for most of my life.
I look forward to meeting some of you in person at events in the area in the future. Maybe at CAF coming up here soon...

Thank You for forming this circle! What about us northern West Virginia audiophiles???!!!

so im a little confused - is the group virtual or in person or both - is it open to people in new jersey - phila - washington - maryland? does philly already have a group?
how do i join? - whats klaus have to do with this - and the klh speakers from the 70's - is northern virginia a part of this group? where's vienna? why are we talking about audio diseases? and addictions? im still confused
im afraid to join - i thought i already belonged to 5 different audio groups since the 90's
-
Ha ha, yes, the organization is somewhat loose to say the least. First, anyone can join, even if you live in Nebraska or some equally distant foreign land, but we never figured anyone that didn't live somewhere that they considered "Mid Atlantic" would want to join. We've had some gtg over the years, but they started waning even before the pandemic, but if we ever get control of this plague they can start up with anyone who volunteers to host. Klaus comes in because a big annual event had been the Capitol Audio Fest show put on by Gary Gill in the northern suburbs of Washington DC. We've traditionally had a Saturday night dinner at some steak house that Klaus often attended. We usually drag in some other audio groups and industry luminaries. How that will all work from now forward no one knows. Initiation fees are $10,000 with annual dues of $2,000 sent to my bank account, I assure you they'll be put to good use developing some destitute audiophile's system. But looking over the account it appears all members are in arrears, for all payments, hmmm, I'm gonna send out a letter when I get around to it. Anyway, welcome to the group, you've already joined.

Those were the days. Cramming beyond room capacity with multiple vendors, the whole MAAC crew, and other VIPs. Even going to the place in Silver Spring as a strong group. Even at the beginning at the old Rockville CAF.
It sucks that everything has changed: there are some of our guys I haven't seen at CAF for years. Phil left for Florida. Klaus and woodsyi have their private dinners, especially at exclusive DC restaurants. In fact, I believe they do that at RMAF as well.
It ends up being me, bunky, and the other guy (forget his handle). We have done it for a few years now. That has become our little tradition. People are welcome to join.
We have to see if 2021 CAF is a go or not. I am still open if someone wants to host a local meet or even for only a dinner.

Hi,
I am brandy new guy here. Was into high audio over 30 years ago with Maggies Tympani 1-D's. Then life side tracked me. Want to come back in my old age. Things sure have trained. Amazed with DIY, though i prob cant. Love it that the real quality parts come to play into that equation.
