16 Ohm availability?
« on: 9 Apr 2016, 12:51 am »
After reading many posts here and also hearing a friend's dual woofer OB GR Research subwoofers, my intention is to build a pair of quad towers using 4 SW-12-16FR drivers per channel paralleled for 4 Ohms total impedance along with a single A370PEQ amp per channel. From theory, if I've got it right, this should give me the same total output as my friend's dual woofer system with the advantages of more driver area (better air-coupling) and less driver motion, plus a vertically distributed source to minimise floor/ceiling interactions. Please tell me if I'm off the track in some way.

Main speakers are rather large (2.2m high) E R Audio electrostatics. Room is 4.5m x 7.5m. Listening is usually no more than 96dB at 3.5m from the speakers.

Assuming the idea is sound, can anyone tell me when SW-12-16FR drivers will be available? They are showing as out of stock on the website as present.

The 16 ohm versions are actually  closer to 12 ohms so  you can't do it that way. You can only run 3 of te SW12-16FR drivers per A370PEQ.  However, you  can use the  HX800 amps ( 2 400 watt monos per box) and run  4x  8 ohm  woofers  per side  ( 2  SW12 o8FR's per   mono).

Jay is correct, I had a pair of 4x12's running from an HX800 and sounded very good indeed.  The HX800 will also do a 6x12, with each amp output running a 3x12 section.  Works well indeed.

Yup yerfdogg, what Hal and Jay said. If you want more than two drivers per side, here are your choices:

- 3 of the 16 ohm woofers and an A370 amp per side (as Jay said, though it's called a 16 ohm driver, it's actually 12, so three of them is the limit on the amp).

- 4 of the 8 ohm woofers and an HX800 amp per side (two woofers on each of the amps two channels).

- 6 of the 16 ohm woofers and an HX800 amp per side (three woofers on each of the amps two channels, you glutton ;-)).

OK. Got it, and thanks for the informed advice.
Now, anyone (Danny?) tell me about availability of the 16 Ohm drivers?

What they said....

And a new batch of 16 ohmers are being built now. They should be ready to ship to me by next month.
