Von schweikerts VR4 jr and sr???
« on: 5 Mar 2007, 03:45 pm »
I have the VR2's very nice sounding speaker but like everyone else we all look to upgrade. I love Von Schweikerts line of products personally. I've been looking at the VR4 jr's and the sr's besides the price difference which the juniors cost 5k and the sr cost 12k. To me both speakers look the same but sonically is there a REAL big difference?

For those that have owned the VR4's I would love to hear from and I am learning so please dont flame me on my questions.

Thanks!

We have a couple of local guys with Von Schweikerts. One guy (Spirit) has the VR 1's, and another has a larger pair (not sure which model).

I'll be getting together with him in the next little bit, and check them out. He likes them quite a bit. I've heard quite a bit about this brand but never heard them before. We have similar tastes in sound reproduction quality, so it'll be fun to check them out.

Cheers

nice speakers, well made, need big clean ss power to drive well.buy a set of used jr's and you will not lose much if you don't enjoy.the jr's are for a smaller room.there really is a vast selection of real good speakers at this price point.i have had these speakers. :D

VR-2's IMO actually hit a very nice spot on VSA price:performance curve.  Run them with a good sub or two, and I don't necessarily think VR4-Jr will be a large upgrade.

VR-4 Sr and Jr share very similar signatures, and the price difference is kind of too large IMO.

I actually think the occasional discontinued VR-6's that come up on Agon is the VSA speakers to go for :thumb:

I've owned, used, and sell all of them...

The 4JR is a big step up from the VR-2, better bass extension, more open midrange, and better detail. The MKII version has tighter bass and a few other small improvements.

VR-4SR MKII is in another league...these are a true reference quality loudspeaker...big, open powerful, and extended at the frequency extremes.

Look into the VR-4 GEN III Hovland Special Edition.  They're tough to find and were produced in small numbers (due to being Special Editions).  I had the VR4 HSE's and the VR4-SR and decided on the former.  The SE's were about $7000USD and can be had used for WAY less.

As mentioned in a previous post, the bigger VS's (like two 9" woofers) need copious amounts of power.  I feed mine with Halo JC-1 monoblocks, rated at some 4.2kW @1 ohm.  Nuts eh!

Check out the reviews or if you're in the Toronto area come by for a listen...

I have had a pair of the VR-4 GEN III Hovland special edition speakers for about two years. No way in hell I'm going to sell these suckers. Best I've ever heard in Mi casa.

They have been sold at their asking price. I was corresponding with the seller earlier today.

It was in fact that seller, a friend of mine, who turned me on to the SE's.  I was about to drop 12K on the SR's and went to his house to take a listen.  Needless to say he saved me an otherwise costly purchase.  Notwithstanding, I went and dropped a boatload on the amps.

What amps and other gear are you using?

Von Schweikert used the D-200's when developing the VR-4JR MKII and VR-4SR MKII. They also use them to demo them in their factory showroom  :D
