Australian HiFi & AV Show

Went to the Australian HiFi & AV Show yesterday.
Think it ended about 5 minutes ago.
Thought I would share a few observations.
Posted it here because this is where I feel most at home.
Mr Moderator please feel free to shift this if you wish!!
This was the second, that's right second major HiFi Show in the same city in less than 6 months.
Hey, might be some sort of record!!
It was a good show.
Fair number of people and some good sessions in the events suite.
Especially liked the Vinyl Masterclass with Mark Dohmann.
The best speaker, in my opinion, was the prototype horn speaker from Krix.
They supply to big movie theatres and are working on a scaled down stereo version.
Liked it so much that I went back for a couple more listens.
Alas, no electrostats, no maggies either!
There was a really friendly helpful attitude running through the Show.
Don't know if anyone else from here went but I was chuffed to go to two major HiFi Shows in 6 months.
Guess that means that HiFi is alive and well in Melbourne!

How many rooms/vendors were there to visit?

About 40 rooms.
About 207 brands and vendors.
That's just my count from the Show Guide.
Because the other show was so close some of the brands/vendors did not come twice, while others did!!
Thought they were similar in rooms, vendors and numbers.
But the feel of both were different.
This one was very much established/friendly relaxed/helpful.
The other one was very much finding its feet/learning the ropes/settling in/getting momentum.
Funny thing, there were also brands and vendors who came to neither!!
Wonder if they did not know which one to go to and could not make up their minds - so they stayed away!!
The first one is back bigger and better.
I would be very surprised if this one was not back because, with all of the uncertainty in the air they went very well!!
Just as an aside, it was not just the middle aged and older guys.
There were some wives but even more, there were a number of younger guys who brought along the kids!!
Enjoyed the day.

But not in Sydney :(

Was interesting to read your comments on the Krix.

From the overheard conversation and internet comments I think there were a number of interstate visitors.
Guess the Sydney HiFi crew who could afford it came down to Melbourne.
Just for the sake of the people who don't know Melbourne's geography.
This one was in the main part of Melbourne in a hotel which was once some sort of big warehouse or something.
The other was a 20 minute tram ride opposite a beautiful big lake and parkland.
Sad that the HiFi scene in Sydney seems to have slipped.
While that in Melbourne seems to have grown in leaps and bounds!!

To add to the information about the Krix speakers.
I spent a long time talking to one of the Krix guys.
Seems they have a large part of their business supplying horn systems to large cinema complexes.
They want to bring their expertise to home horn stereos.
Their system was a high and a middle range horn, crossing over to dynamic drivers at 300hz.
Tri amped system with a DEQX processor.
Sounded very good (although being an electrostatic guy I would not buy one!!).
Thought the tentative pricing was good considering the package.
By the way the the two key DEQX guys were there visiting and talking.
I am guessing that the next prototype will have a fancier look.

I went to that too but left after an hour when he ran overtime. He didn't say much that I thought was news, but was relaxed and entertaining. I did hear him mention that my old TT is underrated, though, which was gratifying, considering his designs sell for big bucks.

I loved it too. More comment after your second post.

I was one of those interstate visitors. Really enjoyed the show. Missed the July show -- time and money.

The potential name is Heretix. I was excited because I know Krix well including the head designer. Also excited because, although Krix have had a good range of well regarded hifi speakers, they have never stepped into the ether that this one will inhabit, being an order of magnitude higher in every way.

You are right that this is not the challenge for them in technical terms that one might assume, because they have extensive experience in the commercial cinema horn-and-box concept. They have also been offering high-end home cinema solutions, such as the Cinematix, that draw heavily on their commercial experience. One can see the conceptual similarity between the Heretix and the Cinematix.

Yes, externally tri-amped, so buyers actually receive a rack-full of gear comprising three 3U boxes of Elektra power amps and a 2U DEQX unit. If it goes to market.

Krix were tweaking the sound over the course of their demos. For instance my companions were unimpressed on Saturday but much more impressed on Sunday. I was there several times too, and heard numerous visitors saying 'best sound of the show', and have seen that comment repeated on another hifi forum that shall remain nameless. One thing is for sure: in several aspects this gear was delivering in ways that no other system on show even approached. And in the biggest room of the show.
