MMG's collectible?

Just saw a used pair go for $800 on eBay with 46 bids! Hmmm,... New Maggies might be closer than I thought!

I don’t understand why someone would pay that for MMGs .

See, by saying that you run the risk of offending MMG lovers like myself. Regardless, even at 800 clams, it’s likely still the most amp friendly planar speaker for the price, right?

Were they stock MMGs?

They were. 16ga speaker cables with banana plugs and a lint roller included. Nice touch.

eBay is notorious for overbidding, there are people who will pay anything for something they want.
You only need two morons to drive the price sky high.  Years ago I paid $350 for a pristine set of oak side panel, off white fabric MMGs, $800 now with the LRS available new for less is insanity.

So far only Saturn has weighed in on the collectibility question. I’m just wondering. Will the discontinued MMG become sought after by folks wanting to try planar speakers but not a gateway to high end?

I would say not.
They had them in production for quite a long stretch and they sold pretty briskly.

That makes me wonder are ANY Magnepan speakers collectible?
I know the Tympani series has their followers.
