Tube Rolling in the Universal Truth Denon 2900
« on: 13 Feb 2005, 05:27 pm »
Has anyone tried tube rolling in their Denon modded players; and if so, what were the results? I know that 6DJ8/6922s are supposed to double the gain (which isn't always a good thing); but other than that, what is the different sonic presentations of the 6922s and 6CG7s?

Also, I see that Upscale Audio is offering the 6H30 at $45 each. Are these any better than what can be obtained at the Tubestore for $19.95?

Thanks in advance for anu input...

6H30's went into the 5900, not the 2900, and are not a replacement for 6DJ8/7308/6922. The 6H30 requires higher filament current, plate voltage, place current and dissipation than 6922. That said, if you have a 6H30 device, you can use the 6DJ8 type tubes, but not the other way around. I hope this was helpful.

Maybe I was not clear---I DO have 6H30s in my 2900. I am curious if anyone has tried the other tubes (6922 or 6CG7) that are also supposed to work in the unit...

I would recommend trying 6CG7's.  I have heard from a customer who tried these and was VERY impressed.  I did experiment briefly during the design process, but it was a long time ago now.

The 6CG7 has the same curves as the 6SN7 - little known fact.

Have fun,

Dan

 Sorry. I forgot that the 2900 mod uses 6H30's .  I have the Modwright 5900 that I absolutely love. Redbook CD's are a "living presence". If a CD was an orange, and the music was juice, this player would extract so much juice that all there woud be left is a pile of dry white powder. I do have a new pair of 6CG7 (RCA cleartops) in a drawer waiting to be played with..... Someday..... Best wishes in your quest for audio nirvana.
