The composer and conductor Jorge Antunes, professor at the University of Brasilia, obtained last Friday preliminary injunction that ensured his registration and the presentation of a series of micro-songs written by him for the project "Estréia Brasileiras", of the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB) in Rio.
Antunes told the court that he suffered "artistic censorship" by the CCBB as his work have been vetoed. The micro-songs entitled "Seis Missivas BB" use excerpts from letters sent to him by institutions linked to Banco do Brasil in the last three years denying support for his work.
According to the conductor the short songs were written "with a lot of humor and irreverence".
The titles of the six micro-songs are:
CCBB-1995 Denying Support to Mini-operas
FBB-1996 Denying Support to Opera Olga
CCBB-1996 Denying Support to Mini-operas
CCBB-1996 Denying Information of Names of Commissioners of Selection of Projects
BB-1997 Denying Support to Ópera Olga
BB-1997 Denying Support to Minióperas.
All of these letters according to the conductor were in response to requests for support for his operas and mini-operas, especially for "Olga" based on the life of communist leader Olga Benário, wife of Luiz Carlos Prestes - completed in 94 but not yet staged.
The "Estréia Brasileiras" project is produced by the company Crescente Produções Artísticas Ltda with support from the CCBB and seeks new classical music to be presented in theaters and later recorded on CD.
On February 15 the director of Crescente Maria Júlia Vieira Pinheiro and musical director Guilherme Bauer hired Jorge Antunes to produce a six-minute work for singing and piano, for R$250 of fee (less than $50 USD today). The commitment was to show the music on 08July1997.
According to the conductor upon learning of the content of the micro-songs the direction of the Cultural Center informed Crescente that it would not allow its presentation. Antunes states that the reason for the veto was "damage to the center's image, which would run the risk of no longer receiving funds from the Banco do Brasil".
"This is a childish position of the center as they do not want to see the texts of the letters they wrote themselves published" said Antunes. The work was to be interpreted by the baritone Ignácio de Nono, who refused to present it. According to the conductor, "supporting the CCBB's position".
The decision go to court according to the conductor, was "due to the tiredness of so many negative responses and the distrust of aesthetic prejudice and ideological persecution".
Last year Antunes tried unsuccessfully to make the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center divulge the names of the people who make the selection of cultural projects. He thought about going to court, but gave up.
Now in the request to Justice Antunes requested - and obtained with the preliminary injunction - his registration in the project and the presentation of the piece on the scheduled date. For this it was based on article 220 of the Constitution of 1988 which establishes free intellectual, artistic, scientific and communication expression "regardless of censorship or license".
