Do you need to buy just another speaker...because it's a "good value" ? Go for the better one.....

I have only heard the 5.   One of the best speakers I've ever heard.  A whole lotta speaker for 6 large.

:D my latest Maggie 3.6's are top-end killers, very sweet highs and mids.they need a couple subs to complete.i have not tried that yet.i thought instead of spending at least two grand plus for a couple subs,i would just go for a full range...... :D

Well...those are nice speakers....but you'll be spending more again for a different set of speakers...

The Vandie's are different the Maggie's....more focused sounding.Maggie's are more open - more "air".

What type sound do you prefer ? That will answer where you go.....

:D  yes, electro's are very open with tons of air.i think my room is a weee bit small for the 3.6's....i am after the full range, sweet top end that is detailed yet light.a mid that kills with support bass that is articulate to the type of drums hit,we Canucks love our bass.i don't know if this is possible with the small budget i have..... :D

So....you think the 3.6's are too much for your room...maybe drop down to the 1.6's with a sub. (or the new 1.7's)

At the last Rave (4/24-now posted), in Emil's system are the Maggie 1.6's with a sub...sounded very good...and since they are a bit smaller, may be a better match for your room.

Too big a speaker in a room...never seems to work right. Helps to match everything....according to how your space goes...

If you're looking at the original Blue Heron I'd proceed with caution.  While they sound great the chink in the armor is the tweeter.  Audax stopped production on that tweeter years ago and used/NOS pairs are very hard to find and very expensive when you do find them.  Add to that a high failure rate on the tweeter (pressurized gas tweeter prone to deflating) and you're looking for trouble!  And comparing this model ($8,800 new) with the Vandy 5A isn't exactly fair.  I personally would only buy them at a fire sale price and do a little DIY to put some other tweeter in when/if they originals fail.

Now the Blue Heron 2 is another story altogether.

What Ericus says is 100% correct.  I owned Heron i for several years and came across that info while researching them.

My buddy has a used pair of BH1 for 6 years now and they are perfect.  So while tweeter failure is possible, it is  not guaranteed.

You should have bought mine during my temporary bout with insanity.

I just listened to the new Wilson Sasha speakers (~$28k) and while they sounded quite good, I wouldn't take them over the 5A's.

I don't think the Sasha holds a candle to the 5A.  Not even a competition IMO.  The Vandy's (all of them) are really nice speakers.

:D  AHHH shit,George i wish you wouldn't of said that.say you can get 5's for five grand on the used market.now,A's are ten plus.they are not twice as good .but, they must be better.the mod is nearly ten grand to get the 5's to 5A's.that helps Richard buy fuel for his plane to fly around the country just like John Travolta. the 7's are way outa reach cost wise.will someone please sell me their 5A's please..... :duh: :D

Pat,

It's not like the 5's are a bad speaker.

In fact, I think you would be very hard pressed to find a more complete, configurable, full range speaker for $5k.

A more fair comparison would be Vand 5A and Meadowlark Nightingale.  I'd pay to see that bout on CCTV!    :eyebrows:
