The question is: does Golden Stren really make the table more lively?

Doubtful... I never liked it much to fish with.

Thanks for the responses guys, for my part the Simplex was sold elsewhere, so WTL is not in my immediate future, but please feel free to continue the thread about thread :)

I had to try out a thicker belt myself and it doesn't work.  I bought something that looks to be .006" or .008" (no size on the label) and the problem is making the knot tight.  no matter what I did the knot eventually loosened and totally came undone.  I think the thicker belt idea can be put to rest.

Getting the know right took me some trying too. First time I'd ever wished I'd been a Boy Scout...

Here's a fisherman's trick if you're trying monofilment:
touch a lit cigarette or something similar to the end of the line and it'll melt into a little blob which won't pull through.

works with other nylon ropes (e.g. climbing rope) not just monofilament.

If the pulley was big enough, would certainly sound better than fishing line.

What I tried was not fishing line, I got it at Jo-Ann Fabric.

Anyone ever notice how sites (including the WT USA site) advertise this as .004mm thread?

It's .004 inches, not millimeters.  That is my point.

Oh, that.  Sometimes New Zealand speak doesn't get translated well.
