In regards to building the ultimate, monster, high end, line source, I too have been working on a project for the last year that will result in a commercial offering soon. There is not much I can share on the subject right now though. It will not be something offered by me or GR Research, but the company name you will know soon enough. I will tell you right now that anything you have already boosted of, or can imagine, will not over shadow what is now near completion.

All I can say is that it has lots of tweeters, lots of mid-woofers, and lots of subs. Most of the parts are proprietary so we'll never be able to buy them. The closest we'll get in DIY space will be the next iteration of the Alpha LS which won't see the light of day till next year sometime.

We live in hope!

I found these quotes in an old thread from HD, posted at the end of July 2002.  So, here we are a year later.  I've not seen anything about this ultimate, monster project Danny mentioned--yet--but what about the "next iteration of the Alpha LS"?  Is there something coming soon?  Inquiring minds, and all that.  Maybe some of that curiosity killing the cat, too.  And a big dose of avoiding work.

So how 'bout it?

Not speaking for Danny,

I just ordered 1 ea. woofer and tweeter for the LS1. I've been poking at putting these together for the last year and a half (really just cut the MDF a year and a half ago and let it go until about 3 weeks ago), and am ready to finish the damping material and put the fronts and backs on. He mentioned to me that he's redone the crossover network. He described them now as tighter and more transparent. They were pretty dang tight and transparent when I auditioned them back in Nov 2001. They really do an amazing job of projecting the illusion of having the music there in the room with you. Will try to post some pictures when I'm done with them.

Title: Line Soures

wshuff,

The commercial models mentioned above will be on the market real soon now. The full line consists of three different line source models, plus matching center channels and subs.

Filling out the full line added some time to the project, but finding the right company to manufacturer the enclosures properly and have the ability to produce the large quantities necessary has been the big delay in the project.

Still it is close and some deals can even be made on some of the first pairs by purchasing them factory direct until a sufficient dealer network is established.

Don't look for prices to be in the range of the Alpha LS though.

I will have finished, completed and playing pairs of all three models here at GR in about three weeks. Actually the finished enclosures are due for delivery here next week but it may take a couple of extra weeks to get them all up and playing.

The latest kits or next version of the Alpha's are not a working progress yet. When the new Neo 10's are released there may be a possibility but I don't see it happening real soon. Besides right now the Alpha LS design has been tweaked to the max and is as great a deal as ever.

Gary,

Good luck with your project and by all means post some pics.  I love seeing things come together.

Danny,

Thanks for the info on the new products.  I didn't figure that they would be in the same price range as the Alphas.  I find it interesting that there is a matching center channel.  Is it a line source?  Most center channels that I see are just horizontal versions of main speakers, but I'm assuming that doesn't work in this situation.  Can you give an idea of what a matching center would look like?  And is there anything there that might carry over to a matching Alpha center?

By the way, I had planned to attend the Dayton DIY event so that I could meet you, but it looks like it is on the same day as the Texas event.  So I take it you won't be coming north, correct?

Thanks again for the info.
