I2s switch
« on: 28 May 2022, 05:52 pm »
Anybody who knows a i2s switch ?
I use a nuprime DAC 9se, the cdt8 pro and the stream 9.
At this moment I switch the cable between the cdt 8 and the stream 9, but it would be more easy to have a switch.

I don't think they exist .....
it is already difficult to make two machines talk in i2s (due to the standard that doesn't exist yet) let alone make 3-4 devices talk in i2s .......
....but maybe Jason can tell us something more.

I tried searching for slightly different switching boxes and signal splitters. Take a look at this:
https://www.amazon.com/avedio-links-Optical-Switcher-Extractor/dp/B07VXPV5QM/ref=sr_1_24?gclid=CjwKCAjws8yUBhA1EiwAi_tpEV_Zzl2CEv1E5snRlaTNvdvvB-exd_smtjgCJfwgAcD8L08cKC37uRoCJ_MQAvD_BwE&hvadid=177267766211&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9031211&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=b&hvrand=9714479216958617475&hvtargid=kwd-2608050625&hydadcr=18916_9698782&keywords=audio%2Bselector%2Bswitch%2Bbox&qid=1653849573&s=electronics&sr=1-24&th=1

If you're handy with assembling parts to become a splitter:
https://www.audiophonics.fr/en/diy-interfaces/input-selector-4x-i2s-input-to-1x-i2s-output-p-11736.html

I have a couple audiophile electronic engineer (EE) friends who might be able to assemble a switch box/splitter box. The connectors would have to be set to the same standard as Nuprime's i2s connectors

Thanks for searching, I have already tried a switch you mentioned first, but they all do something with the signal in the switch so that doesn’t work. The second option looks like it could work, but I don’t see myself making such device.

Hi Michael, I am very interested in such a switch if your friends are able to assemble that.
Of course I will pay for that.

The newer DAC-9X comes with two I2S inputs. This is a limited demand  feature and for the manufacturer to make a switch, the cost will always be higher than DIY.  I can check with R&D how this can be done.

Thanks rustydoglim, I noticed the 9X ,but I bought the 9SE about a year ago so that would be very short trading in, and I understand that the 9X is not so warm sounding. I like the dac 9SE very much for its sound.
If you could get information at R&D would be great, otherwise I keep on switching cable. Thank you.

If you have the 9SE, no point trading-in for 9X. We discontinued the 9SE because of AKM stopping production for a year and switched back to ESS chip in 9X.

Thanks for explaining , I will keep the 9SE for its great sound and I keep switching the i2s cable.
By the way I like all my nuprime gear .

I confirmed with chief engineer that an I2S switch is not a good choice because it will add jitter. The clocking of I2S has to be very precise and done on the main board. Technically a high-end switch can be done but it will cost too much for just a switch.

We are thinking of a standalone sampling rate converter that includes at least two I2S inputs, priced around $549.  This can be an accessory for AMG DAC, Evo DAC and others.

That might be a very good idea to make a combination of a sample rate converter and a switch.
Perhaps future proof with 3 or 4 i2s inputs? And a i2s output.

Hey Wildebeest, I have the CDT-8 and am considering either the 9x or a used 9se. I keep hearing "warm" when describing the SE performance.  Can you detail what that means in terms of the CDT-8?  I like my sound with detail, but not digital aggression.  Thanks!

Hello pjaizz, it is the difference between the DAC chip of the 9se compared to the 9x. AKM sounds warmer ( analoge kind of ) , less fatigue to listen to but in my opinion with a lot of detail. The Ess chip is more hars, sharp details but also unforgivable for slight mistakes. Speaking for myself I become tired very quick listening to ess chip.
