We Thought About Duke
Franz Koglmann, Lee Konitz

Very pleasing free jazz tribute to the Duke with excellent SQ. The bass is nice and gritty.

Thanks for the samples.  This definitely sounds approachable (I admit to having a fear of Monk (too avant garde for me--still looking for a gateway album besides Monk's Music.  This sounds like it might be it.)

:thumb: I was in the same camp for a long time AC. Until a few months ago all I had of his was Monk's Blues on vinyl.    Then a friend shared this one, and I thought 'maybe I should revisit my thinking'. Picked up the Real Gone Jazz 6 album CD remaster, and have been pleasantly surprised. I think like many we heard mostly his late '60s & '70s work and felt he was too free form. His '50s & early '60s work was more 'classic' jazz based, and quite accessible. I see there are a couple of other remaster sets available now by Enlightenment, 54-57 & 57-61 (5 discs for ~ $15 @ azon), that I'll probably check out. The RGJ sets are well done, but seems like there is a tad more bang for the buck with the Enlightenment sets, and they are (to my ears) well remastered. I have a dozen of the RGJ sets, only 1 of the E-ment at the moment, Bill Evans. Makes for an inexpensive way to check various artists out without breaking the bank.  8)

I find Thelonius Monk's "5 by Monk by 5" easy to get into as well as those listed already.

Monk's solo piano playing can be mesmerizing.  Here's a couple to check out:

Samples: Thelonious Alone in San Francisco

Samples: Thelonious Himself

This is also  very accessible:

Samples: Mulligan Meets Monk
