Art Pepper
+11
180g Vinyl from Jazz Classics
Dan's created quite the monster, as I've become a raving Art Pepper fan.  Picked this new album up yesterday and love it.  An 11-piece band playing Marty Paich arrangements of jazz standards.

Art Pepper — alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, clarinet
Pete Candoli — trumpet
Al Porcino — trumpet
Jack Sheldon — trumpet
Dick Nash — trombone
Bob Enevoldsen — valve trombone, tenor saxophone
Vince DeRosa — French horn
Herb Geller — alto saxophone
Bud Shank — alto saxophone
Charlie Kennedy — alto saxophone
Bill Perkins — tenor saxophone
Richie Kamuca — tenor saxophone
Med Flory — baritone saxophone
Russ Freeman — piano
Joe Mondragon — bass
Mel Lewis — drums
Marty Paich — arranger, conductor

His widow in an interview said that Art's performances in Japan were some of his best.

I need to try to find this one--I like Pancho.  I picked up a Latin record yesterday "Mucho Calor" but I haven't gotten a chance to listen to it yet.
Drummer Chuck Flores, percussion of Jack Costanza and Mike Pacheko.

About Artists House,Its a shame they went out of business. They were owned by the artists that performed for them.

Took a flyer on this one from Acoustics Sounds--they had a $10 sale on this copy with a damaged cover and I couldn't refuse.  Interesting that they now have it listed for $55.

Elio Villafranca and Charles Flores
Dynamic Resolution
1/2-speed mastered, minimally mic'd
Stereo version

Not exactly my cup of tea, but it is growing on me as I listen to it.  I'd hoped for a bit more Cuban flavor from the Cuban-born pianist.  Not sure how much play time it will get, but I can't help swinging for the fences

Jazzguy,
I'm with you on that one!  While I've read about constrained and nervous recordings, I haven't heard anything yet that doesn't sound phenomenal.
