FS : A/V 3 Kit with sonicap upgrade
« on: 29 Jun 2006, 01:45 am »
Hi,

I bought this kit a few months back from danny...but after a few attempts at cabinet building, i gave up (80% of the cabinet is done - used plywood though). I'd like to sell this to another AC-er who fancies his DIY skills. I paid exactly $393.00 for this, and would like $350.00 for this. As a bonus, I'll throw in the following -

  • Open Cell Foam
  • PVC Tiles (I was trying to follow Al's method of damping the cabinet)
  • 2 sets of Black Chrome Spikes (~$19.00 per set from PartsExpress)
  • If you are in DFW area, you can have the unfinished cabinets as well. Its not perfect, but it'll save you a bit of labor.

I'd unpacked the drivers and terminal cups to see if they fit well in the cutouts.

You can view the pics at -

Thanks!

Wow, why do you give up, you are almost there!  I bought the full HT kit (av3, av3s, av1rs) several months ago and I'm not finished yet but progressing... slowly.  I would never want to quit without at least listening to the finished product!  Your boxes look pretty good, just a bit more work and you'll be enjoying them, I encourage you to give it a bit more patience.

I really wanted to build this myself ... and tried more than a few times. My major constraint is that i live in a small apartment, and using power tools to cut MDF or ply is a -MAJOR- hassle.
And i don't have a table saw ... and using a regular circle saw one never gets (atleast me) accurate cuts. Just to get this far, i had to cut and recut several boards of ply. Towards the end
when I saw that i had cut one of the sides a little short, i threw in the towel! :cuss:

So whoever takes these cabinets needs to make one more cut for one side of the cabinet.

I found a pair of A/V 3 locally ... so i'm running that with a bunch of amps (Teac digital amp, Monarchy SM-70 Pro, Luminous Audio Passive Pre and onix melody integrated). I can vouch for
the sound quality of these speakers! They sound awesome .. especially with the onix. I can feel the bass in my guts when i'm listening to Massive Attack's latest compilation CD.

Thanks!

Hey don't give up just yet.

If the problem is just making straight cuts, make yourself a sawboard.

http://members.aol.com/woodmiser1/sawbd.htm

This makes pretty decient cuts.  Good enough for a cabinet.   The other trick is to make a jig to keep all the same size boards, the same.

If all that fails, hey...just get a cabinet shop to cut your pieces for you. That part of the problem solved!!!

This is exactly what i used ... but still cuts were inaccurate. Problem is that i don't get perpendicular cuts ... and that has given me a lot of grief! I've already tried getting the cuts made at HD and lowes ... and both of them equally bad.
Like i mentioned earlier, i've already bought a pair of finished AV/3 ...so this kit is lying unused. I feel its a good deal for someone who fancies his DIY skills. Hopefully I can move up to OB-5 after selling this kit   :D

Cacaphonix, are you going to try to finish the cabinets?  They are raw MDF, right?  Easiest would be the woodgrain vinyl from Parts Express.  Mistakes wouldn't cost you much and you'll like the finished look.  Check this out: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&&DID=7&CATID=48&ObjectGroup_ID=135&filter=laminate

Some day you may want to tackle wood veneering :)

Yeh, i need to finish the speakers ... but i'm too overwhelmed by the thought of veneering. I've used PE vinyl before for my dayton-III and wasn't
exactly thrilled by the results. It looks too plastic ... So looks like i might have to bite the veneer bullet.

I'm thinking of leaving edges naked all together. Since they are rounded all over i cannot veneer them ... so i'll leave abt 0.5" of the edge uncovered. Hopefully it'll come out looking halfway decent.

By rounded all over you mean the horizontal edges around the top are rounded?  If so, that's too bad.  I almost always round over the four vertical corner edges and wrap veneer around them.
One guy here used the PE Cherry vinyl - did a careful job and it looks good.  Some people mistoke it for real veneer up to a couple inches away.
