Rabbet for sw12a
« on: 28 Feb 2006, 11:44 pm »
Hi everyone,
I am going to flush mount my sw12a drivers and I was wondering what size rabbet is recommended.  It looks like 3/4, but I don't want to do any more "tests" than I have to and wast mdf.

Thanks,
Kevin

3/4" would mean you would be clear through the front and mounting on the baffle. You might us 1-1/8" MDF for your front. Alternately mount the driver normally an add a 1/2" or 3/4" plywood 'skin' over the MDF. That would make the driver flush mounted. Use the right ply and you get a veneer into the bargain.

Are you asking if you should use a 3/4" rabbet bit or 3/4" material.

We use a smaller ID then cut with large rabbet bit to flush mount the Drivers and PR'S

I am using 1.5" thick material for my baffle.  I will cut 3/4" into the baffle to flush mount, but I would like to know what diameter of the outside circle is needed to flush mount the driver.  The plans for the cab on the website list that an 11" diameter circle is needed to mount the driver. If I use an 11" hole, what width of rabbet do I need?  In other words, what diameter does outside circle for flush mounting need to be? 12 1/2", maybe 12 3/4"?

Sorry, totally misunderstood you. The outside diameter of the Sub is 12-7/8"
So your rabbet needs to be at least 15/16". I know my rabbet bit doesn't go that deep so you are probably in for another lap with the circle jig.

12 and 5/8" makes it a tight fit.

Thanks Guys, thats exactly what I was looking for.   My rabbet bit will only do 1/2", so I will have to just do a pass at the wider diameter to do the rabbet before I cut out the hole like ozdiver suggested.

It was for a customer.
yes 4 GR12" per side in it's own sealed volume.
Veneered in Paduk.

Thanks
