Can song 3 speakers accommodate one more woofer ?
« on: 21 Dec 2018, 02:37 am »

Just wondering if song 3 speakers can fit it one more woofer at least for the ones with 7.5 inch drivers.

Do you think it could work or  if it will bloat up the bass unless the cabinet volume is increased?  :duh:

Double the woofers and you would have to double the internal woofer section cabinet volume.  The speaker would be HUGE.

Even if you could, other than increasing power handling a bit, you wouldn't gain much.  You could not use them in parallel to increase the sensitivity of the speaker since the sensitivity of the resulting woofer section would be too high to match the mids and perhaps the tweeters.

One of the major reasons you see multiple woofers in other designs is that woofers in this size range are normally around 84db sensitive.  So you use two in parallel in order to increase the sensitivity to 88 - 89 db or so.  In this case, the Satori 7.5" woofer is already 88db sensitive.  So there is no need to use multiple woofers.

Hence the existence of the Song3 ENCORE.  Bigger woofer, larger cabinet.  It's just that aesthetically, the mid-range looks disproportionately small.

Jim, what about a 5" midrange instead of a 4"? Pro's/Con's?

Generally, the larger the cone, the more it tends to fire straight forward.  So, in general, a 4" mid will have a bit better off-axis response.
