Right now i'm budgeting myself for a possible Salk/AVA setup.

thanks in advance.

Buy the butcher block and the 80-20 aluminum and slap it together yourself.

It will easily be at least 50% cheaper than the Blinn or Adona stuff.

i'm not sure where to buy the anodized aluminum racks and the butcher blocks?

Here's another guy that makes Blinn / Adona style racks:

Not cheap to buy from these companies, but the quality photos will give you some design ideas, and show just how easy it is to DIY ....once you get the parts.

I use a couple of Sanus Euro series equipment racks.  A six shelf high wide unit in my sound room and a three high unit for my AV stuff in my living room.

This is a different Sanus series than the ones I use, which are modular, have adjustable heights, are sturdy, decent looking, and inexpensive.

I think Jim Salk actually has a black version of the rack I use that was donated to us by Sanus at a trade show a couple of years ago.  He certainly could improve upon it.  :)

Can he make one in BUBINGA?

Yes.  he makes stands and racks for ots of orders that come in to match the veneers of the speakers.  Not an advertised offering but Jim wants to please.

I just built these for an audiophile.  It's what he requested.  Not up to Jim's quality standards by any stretch.

BRM,

Is that 1/4" threaded rod? What did you use for the shelves?

The rods are 5/8-11 threaded rods, 3/4" holes in the shelves.  Oak plywood 3/4" thick.  I mitered all the edges of the 18x24 shelves and mated them to 1.5" mitered strips to make the shelves look like they were 1.5 inches thick.  One unit is 65 inches tall and the other 36 inches.

I've been happy with my Salamander Archetype series rack, but it may not be everyone's taste.  As far as I know that was the first of the often-copied threaded rod designs.

BRM,

Are the rods a single piece, or are they "linked" in some fashion? Can they be found at Home Depot or Lowe's?

FWIW, I searched and waited until I found a deal I thought was good.  I got a pair of the Lovan racks found in the link for the price of one.

I posted this in a similar thread. I've been working on this off and on and it's by no means done, but I have been designing a rack that get's rid of all the things I didn't like about my Sanus rack, which is a very good (and heavy) rack. It needs to be very sturdy, hid the wires and power cords, have adjustable shelves and look good would be nice, too. I'd also like to do something about the shelves to isolate some vibration, especially the top one where one of my tables would go.

Just throwing some ideas out there.

Maybe Jim could build it?

I only found a few 3 foot pieces at HD.  I found the 6 footers at a relatively local True Value hardware store with a VERY extensive plumbing and hardware section.  I was like a kid in a candy store.  The rods were $12 each at 6 foot.  No couplers used.  Lots of spinning of the nuts down the rods.  I leveled a board in the garage first and then built up from that using a level and tape measure.

Grainger has the rods also and can be ordered or possibly picked up in a local sales/dist office.  Also a candy store (one near me).

This was built for a fellow audiophool who needed someone to construct it for him.  After accounting for the rods and washers there's enough room for 19 inch components.

I'm a huge fan of Core Audio Design.

I'm not affiliated with them in any way, except for owning their products  aa

I'd love to see examples of this.
