Title: GR Research Build Threads
Post by: Peter J on 6 Nov 2017, 10:10 pm
I've been talking to Danny about an index of sorts linking individual build threads for all things GR Research. A sticky master thread kind of thing.  I suspect many would find them helpful in their own builds, but many are buried in the archives. Folks with existing threads are encouraged to LINK them here. It's not intended to be a massive compilation but rather a jumping off spot. I'll start if off with examples done over the years.

To Sonicjoy on his build of the NX studio. Firstly, very nice job. I’m using it to guide my own imperfect build. Can I ask whether your suggestion to cut the no Rez sheets into 2, 5x27” and 2, 8x27” should really have been 2, 5x27” and 2, 7x27” since the sheets are only 24x27” total?

Thanks

Hi All, Wanted to drop in and learn about building some GR Speakers.  I am a beginner audiophile so know just enough to be dangerous . . . For the last few years i have been upgrading equipment and trying different ideas that may improve my listening experience. My last upgrade was ordering GIK room treatment . . . which arrives next month. For my next project I thought it may be fun to try to build some speakers and GR products come up regularly on YouTube from reviewers like New Record Day, these treads and others.  Sonicjoys NX studios - look great.  I listen in a relatively small room (10' x 13') - with the speakers on 13' wall.  The room is also our home office so not ideal placement.  Any thoughts?

Hi y'all. My original vision on starting this thread was to build an index to make it easier to find relevant build threads for everybody's reference. It's not mine to control but I would humbly request that it remain true to that vision.

Discussion would ideally be within the referenced threads themselves or begin a new one. Any new posts in old threads will pop to the top so they'll be visible. If you want to post photos of your work, there's another sticky just for that. If we continue down the path of turning this into yet another meandering hodge-podge, the point of having an index is lost. If I could prune it, I would.

Help me out here, so that this one sticky can remain tightly focused on it's original point...to provide an easy reference for all, now and in the future. I'm climbing off my soapbox now.

It is slightly different from Danny’s design, with the ports in the front instead of the back.  But it works well in the room that they are in where they have to be up against the wall behind them.  My thread discusses this in more detail.

Takes 2 Sheets of No-Res according to Danny for this project. Primed and sanded. Going for a smooth look. If I hate it then Dura-Tex covers all blemishes.

Thanks for checking out my build!

To not give away the values, since they are Danny's design. If you want to know the values, you habe to buy the kit.
It's a common practice on this circle.

The Lyngdorf MP60 2.1 pulled everything together. I built the cabinet to nestle the 65" screen between my 3.6 Magnepan planers which need the power of the Musical Fidelity M8 500. I also built the GR Research W/Frame Rythmik powered Open Baffle subs to go with the white look.
The W/Frame subs have worked fine for music but movie bass would often make them bottom out and blow off the covers. The RoomPerfect software has eliminated the problem. Now the subs can handle anything, no bottoming.
Using the RoomPerfect guide, I went all the way to 100% correction with 13 mic positions. There are Magnepan 1.7's on the sides and MC1's in the rear.
The audio realism is just what I was hoping for. Even though the MP60 is an expensive upgrade, I wanted the  Open Baffle GR Research people to hear what the MP60 can do for their subs. PS I know how to get a much better price on the MP60 2.1.

I’ve been pining for a decent Hifi system for decades. Finally in a place where I can make it happen.  A do it yourselfer with a medium budget intending to leverage that into a pretty decent system. I think that describes the middle class skill set. Just received my NX Studio flat pack and awaiting the kit as well as the speaker cable.

I liked Peter's original vision for this thread.

Corndog71, best finish combo Ive seen on XStatics. That has to be solid wood for the front baffle. Im going that route if I can find a thick slab of wood like that.

Sorry to disappoint but my X-Statiks were built in a factory down in Colombia for AV123.  That is a real wood veneer though.

That would be AV123 speakers in what they called “Moho Natural”. That is definitely my all time favorite veneers.  Corndog71’s is a great example is that.

VasjaG, it appears you're wanting to make a build thread here. Please don't. The intention was of this thread was LINK to your thread that resides within the main body of the GR Research Circle. Thus it would provide an index for future builders.  Unfortunately it has run amok of late and is destined to become a bigger mess and less of a reference if we continue down this path. The idea is a good one, but it takes the group to make it work.

Danny or Hobbs, can you prune this thread and remove the chaff?

Greetings, I've just joined the thread. I am building a set of X-LS speakers. It is my first time doing a build of this kind. I have the cases and crossovers finished but have  a question as to the best way to cut up the no-rez for the bookshelf size. Of course the bottom is not covered and I intend to use fiberglass fill for the lower third but don't see how I can eek the top, sides, and back from the four pieces of no-rez. If I am correct, which area is OK to not cover more than an another? With the opportunity for new people to search for topics on the site disabled I am left to this snail way of getting information.

New guy assistance.  With some assistance I put together a crossover for the LGK 2.1.
What determines which internal speaker wires are connected to the binding post/tube connector to the specific area of the crossover?

I identified the negative end of the woofer assembly, the positive end of the woofer, the positive end of the tweeter assembly.  I am having difficulty identifying the negative tweeter loop & where the internal speaker wire that connects to the negative tweeter & slices into the negative woofer, eventually headed to the tube connector.

You will need to run a white wire from the negative terminal of the LGK driver straight back to the white tube connector, it doesn't connect to anything else other than the return leg of the woofer circuit.

You should post a build thread for your LGK 2.1, I think you would be the first for that model.

I will try.  My job is sending me out of town (again) & I decided to change the colors of my cabinets. Pics in about (another) 2 weeks.

* Still on the road but I was able to finish the color scheme & the crossover.  Whenever I get back home I can put it together.

I thought I would post the final outcome of my 'over the top' LGK 2.0 build.

Parts:
- Sonicaps bypassed with Dueland's JDM copper bypass caps
- Mundorf foil inductor (higher value) and Jantzen foil inductor (smaller value)
- Mundorf resistors
- Jantzen (non-magnetic) Speaker posts (I know, but I lost my tube connectors)

Cabinet:
- 3/4 inch bevel on front panel verticals

Finish:
- Ebony veneer (adhered with heat lock glue)
- Osmo hard wax-oil finish (4 coats)

Currently own Wilson Audio Yvettes , KEF Blades and more speakers than rooms...Oh well this hobby will be the end of me one day. I subscribe to NRD, AudioFILE Junkie etc. Looks like i stumbled across the right place if I am going to take something like DIY Build.

Have my two modular 6x12 OB servo sub towers running with the GR-Research SW-12-16FR sub drivers and 4 Rythmik Audio HX300-12OB servo amps.

The modular cabinets are from captainhemo.  The pair is in Hot Rod Black automotive paint.

Building some planar line arrays to go with them and waiting on the baffles to be finished.

Hey guys! Stopping by to post a little montage of my NX-Studio build.

I did not take nearly as many pictures as I should have, missed documenting all kinds of terrible mistakes I made along the way. The build took me a little over three months to complete, working on them in any free time I could capture. I learned a lot, I have never put a speaker together before. This forum was an incredible resource for knowledge and I'd like to thank everyone who posts here for the help. The only thing I did that was a little wacky was suspend some white fluorescent pigment and purple glow-in-the-dark pigment to the final coats of Polycrylic Max. I had a difficult time photographing the effect, but it is pretty groovy under black light.

Unfortunately I just kinda jumped into this and didn't think about how I was going to mount these in the end. My room is pretty small, about 10'x12' and I'm forced into a corner placement. Less than ideal. I ended up needing to fabricate some brackets out of sheet metal (another first) and did my best to make it work. In the end I think I mounted them too close to the ceiling (about 1' from the top). I'll probably end up bringing them down another foot when I muster the energy, though I'll need to rearrange other things on my wall to make it work... Boo. I know looking at this mount is probably giving someone a headache. I DID MY BEST! But if y'all have any ideas, please give them a shout.

I think the next project will be a servo sub build when they get back in stock next month.

I know there's no way I can make a Double Trouble work in this room... But I can't stop thinking about them anyway.

The Studios sound really great. It was a great way to spend my time.

Thanks dudes.  :thumb:

Oh, you can definitely make a Double Trouble work in your room. Place it close to the wall -- not ideal, but who cares? It will still sound far superior to virtually any box sub.

Not sure if this is the right place to say this, but I built a dual-driver open-baffle servo-controlled subwoofer from GR Research yesterday, and it sounds heavenly. The musical sound is natural, relaxed, full, and reassuring - compared to anything I've heard in my home so far.

(Still need to cut & apply the NoRez, etc.)

Previously I had a seven-inch "REL" subwoofer in this same spot. The "REL" sub would send some of the bass directly at the floor, and maybe that's why I frequently would get bass feedback sent back into my turntable if I had the volume up to even a moderate level (but still quieter than if a live jazz quartet were in the room). The new GR Research sub seems to have completely eliminated this feedback issue, besides just sounding so much better overall. I think the bass was also feeding back into my tube amp, because apparently vacuum tubes are microphonic. I don't know if it's the "open baffle" design that protects the turntable & tubes from the bass feedback issue (i.e. the "room boom" / room "pressurization" that some people talk about), or if it's simply the way the REL sub pointed some of its sound directly at the floor. I guess I'm still not clear on what "room pressurization" is, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say, and this sub design definitely works much better than competing products, in my opinion.

You have another very happy customer here; thank you Mr. Richie and others.

I finally started making ground with my Encore builds for my kiddos.  I enjoy to attempt new methods so I used car paint.  I used a vinyl sealer to attempt to seal the MDF edges but I was mostly unsuccessful.  I'm going to paint the edges black to cover the edges.  The other challenge I had was trying to connect the internal wire to the binding posts.  I finally decided to take the binding posts apart so I can lay the binding post panel flat and was able to get a solid connection.  Not yet done but here is the build so far.
