Title: Is Norh still in business?
Post by: TimNielsen on 10 Dec 2012, 10:29 pm
Their website is still up, it sure 'seems' like they are, but the 'news' page on their site hasn't been updated since 2008. Perhaps there is already a thread, but wondering if anyone knows the story with the company.

I've finally saved up enough for a pair of Norh 9s and now I'm wondering if I'll get to buy them  :(

They haven't responded to any emails I've sent.

mbarnes founded the company when he was working in Bangkok back in the 90s. Several years and economic cycles later, Michael is back in the US and pretty much left it to his Thai friends to run the company. It is not the American style internet company it was originally, but they still sell some of the products. I will contact Michael and see if getting some Marble 9.0s is still possible.

Here is what I have so far:

"Hi Michael,

Would Marble 9.0s be available these days? Someone form AC is not getting any response from nOrh."

"Yuth is running nOrh.  He is filling orders which are not as many as before.  He does get occasional orders for Marble and wood.  I have copied him on this e-mail."

Tim please post a few more times to get past the newbie restrictions on this site - in any case tell us a little bit of your story, what you have now, why you have persisited in the quest for nOrh, etc.

Thanks for the update! A friend of mine had some Norh 4s years ago. And another friend a pair of 5s. I just love the design, and I thought they sounded really good, especially for the price! Then I saw the Marble 9s, read some reviews, and knew someday I wanted a pair.

I'll email them and see, the big prohibitive thing now might be the shipping. I know a long time ago, they included that in the price. I doubt that is the same now.

I'm also worried a little knowing that Mr. Barnes is no longer there, I wonder if the quality and attention to detail is as good as I hope it was in the past.

It's a shame someone can't come in and help them build up the company again.

Another thing on the 9.0s, not sure they are selling them with the same drivers now. They may be, hopefully. Either way, you could possibly get the cabinets with crossover, and order the original drivers yourself if necessary. Ask about the options.

Michael Barnes writes:

Yuth and his mother are looking after nOrh.  Because of the declining dollar, increased oil prices  factors, the cost of nOrh products has increased over the years.  nOrh still sells kits and completed marble and wood speakers.  Yuths has some new designs as well.  The website is still up.  People are still ordering   I still try to advise people who write me as often as I can.   My own marble 9.0s are in Thailand and I am excited about bringing them to the US some day.

Yuth wrote me also:

Yes, we are still in business but we are very slow.  Lately we sold out all new Marble3 which we haven't put on the website.  We are rebuilding business again but it will take time.

We are sending some customs orders with DC Gold audio.

We will update website soon.

Hi, this looks exactly my "problem".

Not yet am I the proud owner of Norh gear but I sure would like to be one sometime soon.
I have not yet a response on my e-mails. Does anyone have a suggestion what to do ? Or should I just forget about it?

Also being a complete novice I would like to have anyones opinion on
- do a pair of North marble 9 NEED to be complimented by subwoofers?
If subwoofers required, one does need a separate filter I presume?
- what is the better amplifier pair for 10x6x3 m living room ; ACA 2 B + SE 9 or SE 18

Lastly, is there anyone in The Netherlands that would allow me to come and listen to a pair of Norh 9?

Lots of thanks

I too have been trying to purchase Norh Marble 9s, with no response from emailing Norh.

I had Wooden 7s which were excellent, but a friend has had the Marble 9s for some years and they are extraordinarily good speakers.  The Scanspeak bass unit is so good and within the marble design allows such a great quality of bass you forgive them for not going so deep.  A well integrated sub could offer a bit more bass resolution, however if not well integrated can have a detrimental effect on existing sound quality accross the spectrum.  I prefer them without a sub.
I have had QLN Splitfield Signature and Reference speakers for many years, which also use Scanspeak drivers, but not Revelator which is superior to my ears.
I'd like to find marble 9s at some point, however easier said than done......
