To buffer, or not to buffer?
« on: 4 Nov 2014, 11:49 pm »
Hi folks,

I'm soliciting opinions, please!

I'm going to sell my active preamp, in favor of another LDRX.

The problem that I've got is my phono unit, an older Quicksilver Phono Unit with a Zout of 3 Kohms. It is struggling with the LDRX in the system. I like the old unit, it sounds nice and I've added a stereo/mono switch and an extra pair of RCA's for parallel resistive loading. I can load my Zu/Denon DL-103 between 95 to 105 ohms in one ohm increments!

So should I get a buffer to help the old phono unit do it's thing?

Or sell the old unit, and buy a new unit that can drive the LDRX on it's own?

I should mention that there are very few modestly priced phono units that include a mono/stereo switch. It's a shame for those of us with mono LP's.

most non-antiquated phono preamps will have z-out and v-out that is enough to drive most non-antiquated amplifiers through passives like aforementioned LDR - thus my recommendation  :green:

Well played Sir!

I have boxed up my faithful phono unit to find a new home. I will begin my search for a new phono unit soon!
